The Allegory of the Mysterious Elder and the Villager in Asrar Nameh
In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, a mysterious elder advises a villager about the nature of human insignificance and one's place in the universe. The elder explains that whether a person reaches the exalted heights of the highest throne or shrinks to the size of an atom, their fundamental standing in the cosmic scale remains unchanged and ultimately disregarded. The elder concludes by telling the villager to stop pondering such profound existential questions and instead 'speak of buttermilk' (doogh). This serves as a metaphor indicating that ordinary individuals should focus on their simple, everyday realities rather than overreaching into esoteric mysteries they cannot grasp.
