The Allegory of the Preacher and the Madman in Asrar Nameh
In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, a tale is told of an eloquent preacher (Imam) who claims to have been revealing spiritual secrets from the pulpit for forty years. A madman challenges the substance of his preaching, likening the preacher's words to trying to hold buttermilk in a woven basket (kuvareh). The allegory underscores the Sufi teaching that mere eloquence and outward religious discourse, without true spiritual realization and inner substance, are ultimately futile and incapable of holding profound divine truth.
