به منبر بر امامی نغز گفتار
ز هر نوعی سخن می گفت بسیار

یکی دیوانه گفتش می چه گویی ؟
ز چندین گفت آخر می چه جویی ؟

جوابش داد حالی مرد هشیار
که چل سال ست تا می گویم اسرار

به هر مجلس یکی غسلی بیارم
چنین مجلس چرا آخر ندارم

جوابش داد آن مجنون مفلس
که چل سال دگر می گوی مجلس

همی کن غسل و این اسرار می گوی
گهی قرآن و گه اخبار می گوی

چو سال تو رسد از چل به هشتاد
به نزدیک من آی آنگاه چون باد

کواره با خود آر ای دوغ خوار ه
که با دوغت کنم اندر کواره

به عمری این کواره بافتی تو
ولیکن دوغ در وی یافتی تو ؟

سبد در آب داری می ندانی
سر اندر خواب داری می ندانی

بسی خورشید اندر دشت تابد
ولیکن دشت او را درنیابد

مرا صبر است تا این طبل پر باد
دریده گردد و بی بانگ و فریاد

اگر بینا شود چشمت به اسرار
نماند عالم و دیار و آثار

English translation

On the pulpit, an eloquent Imam Was speaking much of every kind of subject. A madman asked him, 'What are you saying? From so much talk, what do you ultimately seek?' The sensible man immediately replied to him, 'For forty years I have been speaking of secrets. For every gathering, I perform a ritual washing; Why should I not hold such a gathering?' That destitute madman replied to him, 'Speak at gatherings for another forty years. Keep performing the ritual washing and telling these secrets; Speak sometimes of the Quran and sometimes of the traditions. When your years reach from forty to eighty, Come to me then, like the wind. Bring a woven basket with you, O drinker of buttermilk, So that I may put your buttermilk in the woven basket. For a lifetime you have woven this basket, But did you find any buttermilk in it? You hold a basket in water and you do not know it, Your head is in sleep and you do not know it. Many a sun shines in the plain, But the plain does not comprehend it. I have patience until this wind-filled drum Is torn and becomes without sound and cry. If your eye becomes seeing of the secrets, Neither the world, nor habitation, nor traces will remain.'
