Section 1 - The Sixteenth Discourse

Original content

English translation

If the kingdom of the world is under your signet ring, In the end, your place is under the ground. No one remains in the world eternally; Look at the graveyard if you do not know. Consider the world as an inn with two doors; Since as you enter through this door, you leave through that one. You are oblivious, asleep, and aware of nothing; You will die, whether you want to or not. For someone whose death has drawn near, They say thus, that he has drawn up his veins. You too, O weak-veined one, open your eyes; For from the beginning, you have been one whose veins are drawn up. For you, whether you are a beggar or an emperor, Three yards of cotton cloth and ten bricks are your companions on the way. Even if your kingdom is from the fish to the moon, Your outcome is a journey through this gateway. When they suddenly bind your chin (in death), Consider all the kingdom of the world there as a mere trifle. From everything you have, willing or unwilling, You must be separated in the end. The wheel of heaven has played many tricks; There will be no salvation for anyone. By this life which has so many twists, Do not be deceived, for its foundation rests on nothing.
