The Equalizing Nature of Death in Attar's Sixteenth Discourse
In Section 1 of the Sixteenth Discourse of the Asrar Nameh, Attar of Nishapur emphasizes the absolute inevitability and equalizing power of death. The central theme of this passage is that worldly power and wealth provide no exemption from mortality. Attar famously notes that whether one is a destitute beggar or an exalted king (شهنشاه), their ultimate destination and provisions are exactly the same: a narrow grave made of ten bricks and a shroud comprising three yards of cotton cloth. The poem serves as a stark didactic warning to abandon worldly arrogance, recognize the fleeting nature of material possessions, and prepare for the ultimate journey.
