بپرسیدم در آن دم از پدر من
که چونی؟ گفت چونم ای پسر من ؟

ز حیرت پای از سر می ندانم
دلم گم گشت دیگر می ندانم

نگردد این کمان کار دیده
به بازی چو من پیری کشیده

چنین دریا که عالم می کند نوش
ز چون من قطره ای برناورد جوش

بدو گفتم که چیزی گوی آخر
که سرگردان شدم چون گوی آخر

جوابم داد کای داننده فرزند
به فضل حق به هر بابی هنرمند

ز غفلت خود نماییدم همه عمر
چه گویم؟ ژاژ خاییدم همه عمر

بآخر دم چنین گفت آن نکوکار
خداوند محمد را نکو دار

پدر این گفت و مادر گفت آمین
وزان پس زو جدا شد جان شیرین

خدایا گفت این هر دو گرامی
به فضلت مهر بر نه بر تمامی

اگرچه گردنم زیر گناه است
دعای این دو پیرم حرز راهست

ببین یا رب دو پیر ناتوان را
بدیشان بخش جان این جوان را

تو آن پیر نکو دل را نکو دار
فروغ نور ایمان شمع او دار

در ایمان یافت موی او سپیدی
مدارش در سواد ناامیدی

به درگاه تو باز افتاده کارش
به فضل خویشتن ده زینهارش

در آن تنگی گورش همنفس باش
در آن زیر زمینش دست رس باش

کفن را حله گردان در بر او
بباران ابر رحمت بر سر او

چو با خاکی شد آن شخص ضعیفش
به پاکی باد بر جان شریفش

ز جان مصطفی نور علی نور
به جانش می رسان تا نفخه ی سور

گناهش عفو کن جانش قوی دار
به نور دین دلش را مستوی دار

خدایا پیش شاهان مرد مضطر
شود با تیغ و با کرباس هم بر

چو من دیدم که خلقانی که رفتند
همه یک تیغ در کرباس خفتند

تن من از کفن کرباس آورد
زفانم تیغ چون الماس آورد

کنون کرباس و تیغ آورده ام من
بسی داغ و دریغ آورده ام من

تو خواهی خوان و خواهی ران تو دانی
که گر رانی و گر خوانی توانی

سخن با دردتر زین کس ندیدست
کزین هر بیت خونی می چکیده ست

English translation

I asked my father at that moment, "How are you?" He said, "How am I, oh my son? From bewilderment, I don't know my foot from my head. My heart is lost, I know nothing else. This experienced bow will not be drawn By a drawn old man like me in play. Such an ocean that drinks the whole world, Will not be brought to boil by a drop like me." I said to him, "Say something at last, For I have become bewildered like a ball at last." He answered me, "Oh knowledgeable child, By the grace of God, skilled in every chapter. I showed myself in negligence all my life, What can I say? I chewed nonsense all my life." At his last breath, that good-doer said thus: "Hold the Lord of Muhammad in high esteem." The father said this and the mother said amen, And after that, the sweet soul separated from him. "O God," he said, "these two dear ones, By Your grace, seal [their faith] completely. Even though my neck is under sin, The prayer of these two elders is my amulet on the way. Look, O Lord, upon the two feeble elders, Grant them the soul of this youth. Keep that good-hearted elder well, Make the radiance of the light of faith his candle. His hair found whiteness in faith, Do not keep him in the darkness of despair. His affair has fallen back at Your court, Give him asylum by Your own grace. Be his companion in the narrowness of that grave, Be his helper in that underground. Turn his shroud into a silken robe on his body, Rain the cloud of mercy upon his head. Since his weak person turned to dust, May purity be upon his noble soul. From the soul of Mustafa, light upon light, Deliver it to his soul until the blowing of the trumpet. Forgive his sins, make his soul strong, Make his heart upright with the light of religion. O God, before kings, a distressed man, Goes with a sword and with a winding-sheet. Since I saw that the multitudes who have gone, All slept with one sword in a winding-sheet, My body brought a winding-sheet of canvas, My tongue brought a sword like a diamond. Now I have brought canvas and sword, I have brought much grief and regret. You may call me or You may drive me away, You know best, For whether You drive me away or call me, You are able. No one has seen words more painful than this, For from every verse of this, blood has been dripping."
