شنودم کز سلف درویش حالی
هوای قلیه ای بودش به سالی

چو سیمی دست داد آن مرد درویش
سوی قصاب راه آورد در پیش

مگر قصاب ناخوش زندگانی
بدادش گوشتی چو نان که دانی

چو پیر آن گوشت الحق نه چنان دید
سراسر یا جگر یا استخوان دید

جگر خود بود یکباره دگر خواست
که کار ما نیاید بی جگر راست

دل ما غرقهٔ خون شد به یک بار
چه می خواهند زین مشتی جگر خوار

نه ما را طاقت بارگران است
نه ما را برگ بی برگی جانست

چنان غم یار ما شد در غم یار
که نیست از کار غم ما را غم کار

اگر گردون به مرگ ما کند ساز
غم عشقش کفن از ما کند باز

English translation

I heard that in the past, a dervish of spiritual state Had a craving for roasted meat for a year. When a silver coin fell into the hands of that dervish man, He made his way toward the butcher. But the miserable butcher, Gave him meat like the bread you know. When the old man saw the meat was truly not as it should be, He saw it entirely as either liver or bone. It was liver, so at once he asked for another, Saying, 'Our affair will not be set right without liver (courage/suffering). Our heart has suddenly drowned in blood, What do they want from this handful of sufferers (liver-eaters)? We have neither the strength for a heavy burden, Nor the provisions for the destitution of the soul. Sorrow became our companion in the sorrow of the Beloved, Such that due to the work of sorrow, we have no sorrow for worldly affairs. If the heavens arrange for our death, The sorrow of His love will untie our shroud.'
