به راهی بود چاهی بس خجسته
رسن را در دو سر در دلو بسته

چو از بالا تهی دلوی درآمد
ز شیب او یکی پر بر سرآمد

مگر می شد یکی سرگشته روباه
در آن چاه اوفتاد از راه ناگاه

چو دید آن دلو شد در دلو تن زد
به دستان دست محکم در رسن زد

یکی گرگ کهن شد با سر چاه
درون چاه دید افتاده روباه

به روبه گفت اگر مشتاق مایی
فرو آیم بگو یا تو برآیی

اگر از چه برون آیی ترا به
درین صحرا چو من گرگ آشنا به

جوابش داد آن روباه دل تنگ
که من لنگم تو به کآیی بر لنگ

نشست آن گرگ در دلو روان زود
روان شد دلو چون تیر از کمان زود

همی چندان که می شد دلو در چاه
به بالا می برآمد نیز روباه

میان راه چون درهم رسیدند
به ره هم روی یک دیگر بدیدند

زبان بگشاد آن گرگ ستم کار
که ای روبه مرا تنها بمگذار

جوابش داد آن روباه قلاش
که تو می رو من اینک آمدم باش

امان کی یافت آن گرگ دغل باز
که با روبه کند گرگ آشتی ساز

چنان آن دلو او را زود می برد
که گفتی باد صرصر دود می برد

همی تا گرگ را در چه خبر بود
نگه می کرد روبه بر زبر بود

چه درمان بود آن گرگ کهن را؟
که درمان نیست درد این سخن را

چو در چاه اوفتاد آن گرگ بدخوی
رهایی یافت روباه سخن گوی

تنت چاهیست جان در وی فتاده
ز گرگ نفس از سر پی فتاده

بگو تا جان به حبل الله زند دست
تواند بوک زین چاه بلا رست

سگی ست این نفس در گلخن بمانده
ز بهر استخوان در تن بمانده

اگر با استخوان کیبویی تو
مباش ایمن سگی در پهلویی تو

English translation

On a path there was a very auspicious well, A rope tied at both ends to two buckets. When an empty bucket came down from above, A full one from below would come up to the top. It happened that a wandering fox was passing by, And suddenly fell from the path into that well. When it saw the bucket, it threw its body into the bucket, With trickery it firmly grasped the rope. An old wolf came to the top of the well, And saw the fox fallen inside the well. He said to the fox, 'If you are eager for me, Tell me, should I come down or will you come up? If you come out of the well it is better for you, In this desert an acquainted wolf like me is better.' The distressed fox answered him, 'For I am lame, it is better you come to the lame one.' That wolf quickly sat in the moving bucket, The bucket moved quickly like an arrow from a bow. As much as the bucket was going down into the well, The fox was also coming up to the top. When they reached each other halfway, They saw each other's faces on the way. That oppressive wolf spoke up, Saying, 'O fox, do not leave me alone.' That cunning fox answered him, 'You go on, I have now arrived, be patient.' When would that deceitful wolf find safety, For a wolf to make peace with a fox? The bucket was taking him down so quickly, As if a fierce wind was carrying away smoke. By the time the wolf realized what happened in the well, He looked and the fox was at the top. What remedy was there for that old wolf? For there is no remedy for the pain of this matter. When that bad-tempered wolf fell into the well, The speaking fox found deliverance. Your body is a well and the soul has fallen into it, Tracked down from the start by the wolf of the carnal ego. Tell the soul to grab onto the rope of God, So perhaps it can be delivered from this well of affliction. This ego is a dog left in the furnace, Left in the body for the sake of a bone. If you are engaged with the bone, Do not feel safe, for a dog is at your side.
