چنین گفته ست آن دریای پر نور
که خاک او به خرقان ست مستور

که در عالم فقیر آنست کامل
که اندر فقر خود باشد سیه دل

بگویم با تو این معنی مکن جنگ
که تا نبود پس از رنگ سیه رنگ

سواد وجه فقر آید بدارین
نسنجد ذره ای در فقر کونین

چه می گویم که یک تن چون پیمبر
نیابد فقر کلی رنج کم بر

مرا کار تو می آید به بازی
که با اسپان تازی لاشه بازی

مزن دم چون نبی درخورد این راز
تن اندر کار ده با وقت می ساز

به گرد پردهٔ اسرار کم گرد
که نبود مرد این اسرار هر مرد

نیابی در دریای معانی
وگر یابی هم آنجا غرقه مانی

کسی کاو کنه این اسرار جوید
کلید گنج در بازار جوید

چو پی گم کرده اند از راه اسرار
چگونه پی بری ای مرد هشیار

کسی کاین راز پی برد از نهانی
هم او گم کرد پی تو تا ندانی

بماندی گوش بر در، چشم بر راه
ببر پی تا بیابی پیر آگاه

اگر خواهی که در را باز یابی
به عجز اقرار ده تا بازیابی

قبای راز بر بالای جان نیست
که جان را از چنین رازی نهان نیست

کسی کاو در این اسرار بشناخت
همان در را بدین دریا درانداخت

درین دریا گهر های معانی
که می داند بگو تا تو بدانی

به پنجه سال چون شد سوزنی راست
کنون آن سوزن اندر قعر دریا ست

بسی سکان درین دریا باستاد
چو آب از سر بشد در قعر افتاد

بسی سودا ی این تقویم پختیم
هنوز از خام کار ی نیم پختیم

بسی گفتیم کز اهل درونیم
هنوز از ابلهی از در برونیم

بسی اندوه گوناگون بخوردیم
بسی بر خاک خفته خون بخوردیم

بسی چون عنکبوتان خانه رفتیم
بسی همچون مگس افسانه گفتیم

به هر پر کان کسی پرد پریدیم
به هر تک کان کسی بدود دویدیم

گهی با رند در میخانه بودیم
گهی رخ در در بت خانه سودیم

گهی زنار ترسایان ببستیم
گهی در دیر ترسایان نشستیم

گهی با کافران در جنگ بودیم
گهی با آتش اندر سنگ بودیم

گهی سجاده بر دوش اوفکندیم
گهی در بحر دل جوش اوفکندیم

گهی اندر چله سی پاره خواندیم
گهی چون وحشیان آواره ماندیم

گهی با کوف در ویرانه بودیم
گهی با صوف در کاشانه بودیم

گهی در خاره دل پر خار کردیم
گهی در دشت جان ایثار کردیم

گهی سر بر سر زانو نهادیم
گهی در های و هوی هو فتادیم

گهی از فخر فوق عرش رفتیم
گهی از عار تحت عرش خفتیم

گهی با باز جان پرواز کردیم
گهی صد در به آهی باز کردیم

گهی بوده گهی نابوده بودیم
گهی کشتیم و گه هیچی درودیم

بسی در پویهٔ این راز گشتیم
کنون بر ناامیدی باز گشتیم

بسی مردی بکردیم و چخیدیم
کنون نادیده بویی ناپدیدیم

بسی این راه را از سر گرفتیم
کنون این نیز بر دیگر گرفتیم

بسی سیلی و ماه و سال خوردیم
قدح ها زهر مالامال خوردیم

بسی گفتیم دل آرام نگرفت
بسی رفتیم ره انجام نگرفت

کنون رفت آنک حرف از خویش خواندیم
که نا پروا ی کار خویش ماندیم

English translation

Thus has spoken that ocean full of light, Whose dust is concealed in Kharaqan: 'In the world, the perfect impoverished one is he, Who, in his poverty, is black-hearted.' Let me tell you this meaning; do not quarrel, For beyond the color black, there is no other color. The blackness of the face of poverty comes in both worlds, Not a single atom weighs in the poverty of the two worlds. What am I saying? For even a single person like the Prophet, Does not achieve absolute poverty; suffer less pain. Your affair seems like a joke to me, That you play with a carcass alongside Arabian horses. Do not breathe a word, since the Prophet is worthy of this secret; Give your body to the work and accord with the time. Hover less around the veil of secrets, For not every man is the man for these secrets. You will not find the pearl in the sea of meanings, And if you do, you will remain drowned right there. Anyone who seeks the essence of these secrets, Is seeking the key to the treasure in the marketplace. Since they have lost the track of the path of secrets, How will you find the track, O clever man? Whoever found the track of this secret from the hidden, He too lost the track, so that you would not know. You have remained with your ear to the door, eyes on the road; Follow the track until you find an aware master. If you want to find the door open, Confess your helplessness so that you may find it open. The robe of the secret is not tailored for the stature of the soul, For the soul is not hidden from such a secret. Whoever recognized the pearl in these secrets, Cast that same pearl into this sea. In this sea are pearls of meanings; Who knows them? Tell, so that you may know. Since a needle was straightened in fifty years, Now that needle is at the bottom of the sea. Many a helmsman stood in this sea, When the water went over his head, he fell to the bottom. We have cooked much melancholy of this reckoning, Still, from raw work, we are only half-cooked. We said a lot that we are of the people of the inside; Still, from foolishness, we are outside the door. We suffered much varied sorrow, Many times sleeping on the dust, we drank blood. Many times like spiders we spun a house, Many times like flies we told fables. With whatever wing one flies, we flew, With whatever run one runs, we ran. Sometimes we were with the rogue in the tavern, Sometimes we rubbed our face against the door of the idol temple. Sometimes we tied the girdle of Christians, Sometimes we sat in the monastery of Christians. Sometimes we were at war with infidels, Sometimes we were with the fire inside the stone. Sometimes we threw the prayer rug over our shoulder, Sometimes we cast boiling into the sea of the heart. Sometimes we recited the thirty parts in the retreat, Sometimes we remained wandering like wild beasts. Sometimes we were with the owl in the ruin, Sometimes we were with wool in the dwelling. Sometimes in the hard rock we filled the heart with thorns, Sometimes in the plain we sacrificed our soul. Sometimes we laid our head upon our knees, Sometimes we fell into the clamor of 'Hu'. Sometimes out of pride we went above the Throne, Sometimes out of shame we slept beneath the Throne. Sometimes we flew with the falcon of the soul, Sometimes we opened a hundred doors with a sigh. Sometimes we existed, sometimes we were non-existent, Sometimes we sowed, and sometimes we reaped nothing. We wandered much in the pursuit of this secret, Now we have returned in despair. We showed much manliness and strove hard, Now, not having caught a scent, we are invisible. Many times we started this path from the beginning, Now we have taken this too upon another. We suffered many slaps and months and years, We drank cups brimful of poison. We said much, the heart found no peace, We traveled much, the path did not conclude. Now gone is that time when we read letters from ourselves, For we have remained heedless of our own affair.
