مگر باز سپید شاه برخاست
بشد تا خانهٔ آن پیرزن راست

چو دیدش پیرزن برخاست از جای
نهادش در بر خود بند برپای

سبوسی تر خوشی در پیش او کرد
نهادش آب و مشتی جو فرو کرد

کجا آن طعمه بود اندر خور باز
که باز از دست شه خوردی در اعزاز

کژی مخلب و چنگل بدیدش
بدان تا چینه برچیند نچیدش

به آخر هم بخورد آن چینه را باز
به صد سختی طپیدن کرد آغاز

همه بالش ببرید و پرش کند
که تا با او بماند بوک یک چند

ز هر سویی درآمد لشگر شاه
بدان سان باز را دیدند ناگاه

بشه گفتند کار پیرزن باز
که چون سرگشته شد زان پیرزن باز

شهش گفتا چه گویم با چنین کس
جوابش اینچ او کردست این بس

الا ای خواب خوش برده زنازت
به دست پیرزن افتاده بازت

مرا صبرست تا این باز ناگاه
به صد غیرت رسد با حضرت شاه

به پیش شه ندانم تا چه گویی
تو این دم خفتهٔ فردا چه گوئی

English translation

It happened that the king's white falcon rose up And went straight to the house of an old woman. When the old woman saw it, she rose from her place; She brought it before her and tied its feet. She placed some pleasant wet bran before it; She set down water and poured a handful of barley. How could that food be fitting for the falcon, When the falcon used to eat from the king's hand in honor? She saw the crookedness of its claws and talons, And so that it might pick up grain, she trimmed them. Finally, the falcon ate that grain, And with a hundred hardships, it began to flutter. She cut all its wings and plucked its feathers, So that perhaps it might remain with her for a while. The king's army arrived from every direction; Suddenly, they saw the falcon in that condition. They told the king the tale of the old woman and the falcon, And how the falcon had been bewildered by that old woman. The king said of it, 'What can I say to such a one? As an answer to what it has done, this consequence is enough.' O you whom sweet sleep has carried away from your luxury, Your falcon has fallen into the hands of an old woman! I have patience until this falcon suddenly Returns with a hundred-fold zeal to the King's presence. I do not know what you will say before the King; You are asleep at this moment, what will you say tomorrow?
