The Allegory of the Royal Falcon and the Ignorant Old Woman in Attar's Asrar Nameh

The story of the king's white falcon that strays into the house of an ignorant old woman is a classic Sufi allegory. The royal falcon represents the human soul or divine spirit that has wandered from its true creator (the King) and fallen into the material world. The old woman represents worldly attachment (dunya) or the lower self (nafs). Her actions of clipping the falcon's wings and talons and feeding it straw symbolize how spiritual ignorance and worldly preoccupations degrade and confine the human soul, preventing it from realizing its true potential and returning to the divine realm.
