یکی پرسید از آن شوریده ایام
که تو چه دوست داری گفت دشنام

که هر چیزی که دیگر می دهندم
بجز دشنام منت می نهندم

چرا چندین تو اندر بند خلقی
بدان ماند که حاجتمند خلقی

که گر ناگاه سیمی بر تو بشکست
نگیرد کس بیک جو زر ترا دست

اگر از جوع گردی نیم مرده
برای تکیه کردن نیم گرده

اگر روزی بباشی بهر دو، نان
ترا از پای بنشانند دونان

ببین تا از کرم پروردگارت
نشاند اندر نمازی چند بارت

ترا چون چشم برجانست وجانان
دلت را کی سرجانست و جانان

چو نان از خوان ستانی خوان بود شوم
که بی شک خوان بیش از نان بود شوم

چه گردی گرد خوان و شاه چندین
که مشتی عاجزند و خوار و مسکین

English translation

Someone asked that madman of the time, "What do you like?" He replied, "Insults, Because whatever else they give me, They place an obligation upon me, except for insults." Why are you so much in bondage to people? It seems that you are in need of people. For if suddenly you lack a silver coin, No one will help you for even a barleycorn of gold. If you become half-dead from starvation, They will not give you half a loaf of bread to lean on. If one day you are in need of two loaves of bread, Base people will bring you down to your knees. See how by the grace of your Lord, He makes you sit in prayer several times a day. Since your eyes are upon the soul and the Beloved, When does your heart care for life and worldly loved ones? When you take bread from a spread, the spread is ominous, For undoubtedly the spread is more ominous than the bread. Why do you circle around the spread and the king so much? For they are a handful of helpless, wretched, and poor people.
