بسگ گفتند زر داری سگ از ننگ
گهی فریاد می کرد و گهی جنگ

چو سگ از ننگ زر فریاد دارد
بیک جو خواجه چون دل شاد دارد

سگ اندر ننگ زر در جنگ و بانگیست
ترا زر می کند بانگ ارچه دانگیست

ز جایی گر ترا دانگی درافتد
ترا زان زر سقط بانگی درافتد

اگر صد بدرهٔ زر برفشانی
بود کم دانگی آن میزبانی

الا ای مرد دنیا دار مستی
چه خواهی دید زین دنیاپرستی

چرا در بت پرستی ای هو جوی
بسان کافران آوردهٔ روی

چرا داری طریق کافران رت
که تو زر می پرستی کافران بت

بتی زر نیست صد من پیش کفار
ترا یک جو زرست ای مرد دین دار

برو دنیا بدنیا دار بگذار
زر و بت در کف کفار بگذار

نشاید زر به جز بت ساختن را
نشاید بت به جز انداختن را

اگر صد گنج زر در پیش گیری
بروز واپسین درویش میری

English translation

They said to the dog, "Do you possess gold?" The dog, out of shame, Sometimes cried out and sometimes fought. Since a dog cries out from the shame of gold, How can a master's heart be glad with a single grain of it? The dog fights and howls over the disgrace of gold, While gold calls out to you, even if it is just a dang (a small coin). If a dang falls to you from somewhere, A disgraceful clamor arises in you from that gold. If you scatter a hundred purses of gold, That hospitality is worth less than a dang. O intoxicated man of the world, What will you gain from this world-worship? Why, O seeker of whims, in idol-worship Have you turned your face like the infidels? Why do you follow the path of the infidels? For you worship gold, while the infidels worship an idol. To the infidels, a hundred maunds of gold is not an idol, Yet to you, O religious man, a single grain of gold is! Go, leave the world to the worldly; Leave the gold and the idol in the hands of the infidels. Gold is fit for nothing but making an idol, And an idol is fit for nothing but being cast away. Even if you gather a hundred treasures of gold before you, On your last day, you will die a pauper.
