مگر بیمار شد آن تنگ دستی
که دایم کونهٔ هیزم شکستی

بپرسش رفت غزالی بر او
نشست از پای اما بر سر او

بدو گفتا که بهتر گردی این بار
مخور غم زین جوابش داد بیمار

که بهتر گشته گیرم ای خردمند
شکسته بار دیگر کونه ای چند

چه برهم می نهی چون آخر کار
فور خواهد فتاد از هم بیک بار

ز سود خود مشو خشنود دنیا
اگر مردی زیان کن سود دنیا

یقین می دان که مرد راه آنست
که سود این جهان او را زیانست

ز بی هیچی خود پیچش نباشد
نباشد هیچش از هیچش نباشد

بزرگانی که دین مقصود ایشانست
زیان کار دنیا سود ایشانست

بدنیا ملک عقبی زان خردیدند
که این صد ساله سختی سود دیدند

تو نیز ای مانده در دنیای فانی
چنین بیع و شری کن گر توانی

زیان آمد همه سود من و تو
فغان از زاد وز بود من و تو

بزادن جمله در شوریم و آشوب
بمردن جمله در زیر لگدکوب

جهان تا بود ازو جان می برآمد
یکی می رفت و دیگر می درآمد

جهان را ماه شادی زیر میغ است
همه کار جهان درد و دریغ است

جهان با سینهٔ پر درد ما را
خوشی درخواب خواهد کرد ما را

ز بیدادی جهان داند جهان سوخت
نباید گرگ را دریدن آموخت

چنان می جادوی سازد زمانه
که کس دستش نبیند در میانه

بدست چپ نماید این شگفتی
تو پای راست نه در پیش و رفتی

ترا با جادویی او چه کارست
مقامت نیست دنیا ره گذارست

جهان بر ره گذر هنگامه کردست
تو بگذر زانک این هنگامه سردست

اگر کودک نیی بنگر پس و پیش
بهنگامه مه ایست ای دوست زین پیش

چه می خواهی ز خود بیرون بمانده
میان خاک دل پرخون بمانده

برو جان گیر و ترک این جهان کن
که او گیر و داوش در میان کن

چه خواهی داو زین گردنده پرگار
که خواهی شد بد او او گرفتار

چه بخشد چرخ مردم را در آغاز
که در انجام نستاند از او باز

چو طاوسیست گردون پرگشاده
جهانی خلق را بر پر نهاده

بروز این آسمان دود کبودست
بشب آب سیاه آخر چه بودست

بماندی در کبودی و سیاهی
بمردی در میان آخر چه خواهی

برو زین گرد نای آبنوسی
چه زین درنده درزی می بیوسی

سخن تا چند گویی آسمان را
که بی شک بر زمین اندازد آنرا

زدست آسمان هر دل که جان داشت
گرش دستست هم بر آسمان داشت

فلک طشتیست پر اخگر ز اختر
تو دل پر تفت زیر طشت و اخگر

سزد گر پای بر آتش بماندی
که زیر آتشین مفرش بماندی

گر از خورشید فرق تو کله داشت
کله نتوانی از گردون نگه داشت

مرا باری دل از گردون فرومرد
ز بس کس کو برآورد و فرو برد

کرا این گنبد گردان بر آرد
که نه در عاقبت از جان برآرد

جهان خون بی حد و بی باک کردست
بسی زین تیغ زیر خاک کردست

فلک هر لحظه دیگر چیزت آرد
بهر ساعت بلایی نیزت آورد

عجب درمانده ام چون مبتلایی
که دل چون می چخد با هر بلایی

بگو تا چند گاه اندوه و گه غم
فغان از روز و شب وز سال و مه هم

نگردد هیچ صبحی روز نزدیک
که تا بر ما نگردد روز تاریک

نگردد هیچ شامی شب پدیدار
که نه شب خوش کند شادی بیک بار

نگردد هیچ ماهی نو درین باب
که تا بر ما نپیمایند مهتاب

نگردد هیچ سالی نو ز ایام
که نه ده ساله از ماغم کند وام

حدیث ماه و سال و روز و شب بین
عجب بازی چرخ بوالعجب بین

چو شب انگشت ریزندش ببردر
بهر روزی ببایندش ز سر در

تنوری تافتست این دیر ناساز
کزو بی سوز ناید گردهٔ باز

بتر زین در زمانه فتنه ای نیست
کزین چنبر رسن را رخنه ای نیست

اگر خواهی که تو بیرون گریزی
نه پایست و نه چنبر چون گریزی

که گفتت گرد چرخ چنبری گرد
که قد همچو سروت چنبری کرد

سپهری را که دریاییست پرجوش
شدی چون چنبر دف حلقه در گوش

ترا چون چنبر گردون فرو بست
چرا در گردنش چنبر کنی دست

سپهر چنبری چنبر بسی زد
چو حلقه بر در حق سربسی زد

بسی چنبر بزد چون خاک بیزی
نیامد بر سر غربال چیزی

درین اندوه پشتش چنبری شد
لباس او ز غم نیلوفری شد

تو می خواهی که برخیزی ببازی
ازین چنبر جهی بیرون چو غازی

تو نشناسی الف از چنبری باز
مکن سوی سپهر چنبری ساز

گذر زین چنبر آن ساعت توانی
که جان برچنبر حلقت رسانی

اگر صد گز رسن باشد بناکام
گذر بر چنبرش باشد سرانجام

زهی افسوس و حیلت سازی ما
زهی دوران چنبر بازی ما

جهانا طبع مردم خوار داری
که چندین خلق در پروار داری

یکایک را میان نعمت و ناز
بپروردی و خوردی عاقبت باز

جهانا کیست کز دور تو شادست
همه دور تو با جور تو بادست

جهانا غولی و مردم نمایی
که جو بفروشی و گندم نمایی

جهانا با که خواهی ساخت آخر
بکوری چند خواهی باخت آخر

دلا ترک جهان گیر از جهان چند
ترا هر دم ز دور او زیان چند

ز دست نه خم پرپیچ ایام
چه می پیچی بخواهی مرد ناکام

جهان چون نیست از کار تو غم ناک
چرا بر سر کنی از دست او خاک

چه سود ار خاک بر افلاک ریزی
که گر سنگی میان خاک ریزی

جهان را بر کسی غم خوارگی نیست
کسی را چاره جز بیچارگی نیست

جهان چو تو بسی داماد دارد
بسی عید و عروسی یاد دارد

نه بتواند زمانی شاد دیدت
نه یک دم از غمی آزاد دیدت

بعمری می دهد رنج مدامت
که تا کار جهان گیرد نظامت

بعمری جز بلا حاصل نبینی
که تا روزی بکام دل نشینی

چو بنشستی برانگیزد بزورت
بزاری می دواند تا بگورت

تو تا بنشستهٔ در دار فانی
نشسته رفتهٔ و می ندانی

مثالت راست چون گردست پیوست
که گرد آنگه رود بی شک که بنشست

ز دور نه سپهر یک ده آیت
چه باید کرد چندینی شکاست

فلک سرگشته تر از تست بسیار
چه باید خواست زو یاری بهر کار

فلک عمری دوید اندر تک و تاز
که تا سرگشتگی دارد ز خود باز

چو نتواند که از خود باز دارد
ترا چون در میان ناز دارد

English translation

Once, a destitute man fell ill, Who always used to break stumps of firewood. Ghazali went to visit him, Sat at his feet, but (focused) on his head. He said to him, "You will get better this time, Do not grieve over this." The sick man answered him, "Suppose I get better, oh wise one, And break a few more stumps once again. What are you piling up? Since at the end of the matter, It will all fall apart at once. Do not be pleased with the world's profit for yourself; If you are a man, consider the world's profit a loss. Know for certain that the man of the path is he, To whom the profit of this world is a loss. From his nothingness, he has no twisting (distress); He has nothing, and from his nothingness, he is not. The great ones whose goal is religion, The loss of worldly affairs is their profit. They bought the kingdom of the hereafter with the world, Because they saw this hundred years of hardship as profit. You too, oh one who has remained in the mortal world, Make such a trade if you can. All the profit of you and me turned out to be a loss; Alas for the birth and existence of you and me. In being born, we are all in turmoil and chaos, In dying, we are all trampled underfoot. As long as the world has been, souls have departed from it; One would leave and another would enter. The moon of the world's joy is under a cloud, All the affairs of the world are pain and regret. The world with our pain-filled chest, Will put us to sleep with its pleasures. The world knows how to burn the world with injustice, One should not teach a wolf how to tear apart. Time performs magic in such a way, That no one sees its hand in the middle. It shows this wonder with its left hand, You put your right foot forward and are gone. What business do you have with its magic? The world is not your dwelling, it is a passageway. The world has created a tumult on the passageway; You pass by, for this tumult is cold (futile). If you are not a child, look behind and ahead, Do not stand at the tumult anymore, oh friend. What do you want, having been left outside of yourself, Remaining amidst the dust with a heart full of blood? Go, take your soul and abandon this world, Put its struggles and claims in the middle (leave them aside). What claim do you want from this turning compass, For you will become captive to its evil. What does the wheel (of fortune) bestow upon people in the beginning, That it does not take back from them in the end? The firmament is like a peacock with spread wings, Having placed a world of creatures upon its wings. By day, this sky is dark blue smoke, By night, it is black water; what has it been in the end? You remained in the dark blue and blackness, You died in the middle; what do you want in the end? Go away from this turning ebony flute (sky); What do you expect from this tearing tailor? How long will you speak to the sky? For without a doubt, it will throw it to the ground. From the hand of the sky, every heart that had a soul, If it has a hand, also raised it to the sky. The firmament is a basin full of embers from the stars, You are a heart full of heat under the basin and embers. It is fitting if your foot remains on the fire, For you have remained under a fiery carpet. If your head had a crown from the sun, You could not keep the crown from the turning sky. At least my heart died down from the firmament, From the many people it raised and brought down. Whom does this turning dome raise up, That in the end, it does not take their soul? The world has shed boundless and fearless blood; It has put many under the dust with this sword. The firmament brings you something else every moment; Every hour it also brings you a calamity. I am wondrously helpless like an afflicted one, How the heart struggles with every calamity. Tell me, for how long sometimes sorrow and sometimes grief? Alas for the day and night, and the year and month too. No morning brings the day near, Without the day becoming dark for us. No evening makes the night appear, Without the night taking away joy at once. No moon becomes new in this regard, Without them measuring the moonlight upon us. No year becomes new from the days, Without making us borrow ten years of grief. See the tale of the month and year and day and night, See the wondrous play of the wondrous wheel. Like the night, they pour its fingers on the door, Every day they must bring it from the beginning. This discordant monastery has heated an oven, From which a round loaf does not come back without burning. There is no sedition in the age worse than this, That there is no breach for the rope from this hoop. If you want to flee outside, There is neither foot nor hoop, how will you flee? Who told you to go around the hoop-like wheel, Which made your cypress-like stature hoop-like (bent)? To a sky that is a boiling sea, You became a ring in the ear like the hoop of a tambourine. Since the hoop of the firmament bound you down, Why do you hoop your hands around its neck? The hoop-like sky struck the hoop many times, Like a ring on the door of truth, it knocked its head many times. It struck the hoop many times like sifting dust; Nothing came upon the sieve. In this sorrow, its back became hoop-like (bent); Its garment became lotus-colored (blue/dark) from grief. You want to rise up and play, To leap out of this hoop like a tightrope walker. You do not know an 'Alif' from a hoop (you are ignorant); Do not make a tune towards the hoop-like sky. You can pass this hoop at that moment, When you bring your soul to the hoop of your throat. If a rope is a hundred yards long, unwillingly, Its passage will be through the hoop in the end. Alas for our sorrow and trickery! Alas for our era of playing with the hoop! Oh world, you have a man-eating nature, That you keep so many people in your fattening stall. One by one amidst bounty and comfort, You nourished them and devoured them again in the end. Oh world, who is happy from your rotation? All your rotation is with your oppression to the wind. Oh world, you are a ghoul and appear as human; You sell barley and show wheat. Oh world, with whom will you make peace in the end? In blindness, how long will you gamble in the end? Oh heart, take leave of the world! How much from the world? How much loss do you suffer every moment from its rotation? From the hand of the nine twisting vats (skies) of the days, Why do you twist? You will die unfulfilled. Since the world is not sorrowful about your affairs, Why do you pour dust on your head because of it? What profit is it if you pour dust on the heavens? For if you pour a stone amidst the dust... The world has no sympathy for anyone; No one has a remedy but helplessness. The world has many grooms like you, It remembers many Eids and weddings. It cannot see you happy for a moment, Nor see you free from grief for a breath. In a lifetime, it gives you constant suffering, So that the affairs of the world take your order (arrangement). In a lifetime, you see no harvest but calamity, So that one day you may sit according to your heart's desire. When you sit, it rouses you by force, It makes you run miserably to your grave. While you are sitting in the mortal abode, You have gone while sitting and do not know. Your parable is exactly like dust continuously, For dust undoubtedly goes (away) when it has settled. From the rotation of the nine firmaments, a ten-fold verse (sign) What must be done, so many complaints? The firmament is much more bewildered than you, Why should one seek help from it in every matter? The firmament ran a lifetime in rushing and running, So that it might hold back bewilderment from itself. Since it cannot hold it back from itself, How can it hold you in comfort in the middle?
