به وقت نزع پیری زار بگریست
بدو گفتند پیرا گریه از چیست ؟

چنین گفت او که اندر قرب صد سال
دری می کوفتم من در همه حال

کنون خواهد گشاد آن در به یک بار
از آن می گریم از حسرت چنین زار

که آگه نیستم کاین در به عادت
شقاوت می گشاید یا سعادت

فرو می افتم از چرخ برین من
کجا آیم ندانم بر زمین من

مثالم کعبتین شش سو آید
که تا خود بر کدامین پهلو آید

در آن ساعت که جان از تن رها شد
دو عالم آن زمان از هم جدا شد

ازین سو تن به بی هوشی فرو رفت
وزان سو جان به خاموشی فرو رفت

که داند؟ کاین دو را کز هم جدا شد
کجا بود و کجا آمد کجا شد؟

جوامردا ازین نبود زیانت
که گویی خواب خوش باد ای جوانت

اگر بیتی خوشت آید ز جایی
من بیچاره را گویی دعایی

مرا کاری برآید روزگاری
ترا بزیان نیاید هیچ کاری

دعایی زود رو چون گشت نزدیک
مرا نوری بود درخاک تاریک

مرا راحت ترا باشد ثوابی
خلاصم باشد ار باشد عقابی

تو خوش بنشسته در دنیای فانی
که من در خاک چون باشم نهانی

زهی ناخوش رهی در پیش ما را
زهی بی شفقتی بر خویش ما را

English translation

At the time of death, an old man wept bitterly, They asked him, "Old man, why are you crying?" He answered, "For nearly a hundred years, I have been knocking on a door in every condition. Now that door is about to open all at once, I cry so bitterly out of regret, Because I do not know if this door, according to its custom, Will open to misery or to happiness. I am falling down from this lofty sphere, Where will I land? I do not know where on earth. My example is like a six-sided die, Who knows upon which side it will fall? In that hour when the soul is released from the body, The two worlds are separated from each other at that moment. On this side, the body falls into unconsciousness, And on that side, the soul falls into silence. Who knows? These two which are separated from each other, Where were they, where did they come from, and where did they go? O noble man, you will suffer no loss from this, If you say, 'May your sleep be pleasant, O youth!' If a verse pleases you from somewhere, Say a prayer for me, the helpless one. It will accomplish something for me one day, And it will not cost you anything at all. Say a prayer quickly when it draws near, It will be a light for me in the dark earth. It will bring me comfort, and you a reward, It will be my deliverance if there is punishment. You sit happily in the mortal world, While I will be hidden in the dust! What an unpleasant path lies before us! What a lack of compassion we have for ourselves!"
