شنودم من که طوطی را اول در
نهند آیینه ای اندر برابر

چو طوطی روی آیینه ببیند
چو خویشی را هر آیینه ببیند

یکی گوینده خوش الحان و دمساز
برآرد از پس آیینه آواز

چنان پندارد آن طوطی دلبر
که هست آواز آن طوطی دیگر

چو حرفی بشنود گردد دلش شاد
به لطفی گیرد او حرفی چنان یاد

وجود آیینه است اما نهان است
عدم آیینه را آیینه دان است

هر آن صورت که در نقص و کمالی ست
درین آیینه عکسی و خیالی ست

چو تو جز عکس یک صورت نبینی
همه با عکس خیزی و نشینی

تو پنداری که هر آواز و هر کار
از آن عکس است کز عکسی خبردار

همه خلقان هم از خود بی خبر دان
همه چیزی طلسم یکدگر دان

چو تو در پیش آیینه نشینی
نبینی آیینه تو روی بینی

وجود ار ذره ای گشتی پدیدار
شدی زین هر دو گیتی سرنگوسار

وجود آتش جهان پشم چیده
نمانده پشم و آتش آرمیده

جهان و هرچه در هر دو جهان است
چو عکسی ست و ترا برعکس آنست

اگر جز عکس چیزی بر تو افتد
چون آن حلاج آتش در تو افتد

برآری پنبهٔ پندار ت از گوش
درآیی چون خم خمخانه در جوش

سراپایت یکی گردد چو فرموک
چو مردان ترک گیری پنبه و دوک

شود چون پنبه ای موی سیاهت
نه سر ماند نه پنبه در کلاهت

چو تو یک دانه پنبه نیرزی
نه حلاجی کنی دیگر ، نه درزی

ترا پنبه کند از خود که هین دور
که بر جای تو می بنشیند آن نور

مشو زنهار ای مرد فضولی
ازین معنی که من گفتم حلولی

حلول و اتحاد اینجا حرام است
ولیکن کار استغراق عام است

چراغ آنجا که خورشید منیر است
میان بود و نابودی اسیر است

چه جای نه عدد باشد نه اعراض
نه اجسام و نه اجزا و نه ابعاض

هر آن حکمی که کردی آن تو باشی
عطیم و عالم و دیان تو باشی

هر آن وصفی که حق را کرد خواهی
چنان دانم که انسی فرد خواهی

تو اندر وصف او چیزی که دانی
ز دفتر های وهم خویش خوانی

چو فهم تو تو باشی او نباشد
اگر وصفش کنی نیکو نباشد

چو نه اوست ونه غیر او صفاتش
صفاتش چون کنی بشناس ذاتش

بدو بشناس او را راهت این است
طریق جان معنی خواهت این است

English translation

I have heard that first, they place a mirror in front of a parrot. When the parrot sees the face in the mirror, whenever it sees what seems like its kin in the mirror, a sweet-singing and harmonious speaker utters words from behind the mirror. That charming parrot imagines that the voice belongs to that other parrot. When it hears a word, its heart becomes glad, and with grace, it memorizes the word thus. Existence is the mirror, yet it is hidden; know that non-existence is the mirror-case. Every form, whether in deficiency or perfection, is but a reflection and an illusion in this mirror. Since you see nothing but the reflection of a form, you rise and sit entirely with the reflection. You imagine that every voice and every action is from that reflection, which is aware of a reflection. Know that all creatures are unaware of themselves, know that everything is a talisman to one another. When you sit in front of the mirror, you do not see the mirror, you see the face. If a particle of Existence were to appear, both these worlds would be turned upside down. Existence is fire, the world is plucked cotton, the cotton will not remain, nor the fire rest. The world, and whatever is in both worlds, is like a reflection, and you are its inverse. If anything other than the reflection falls upon you, fire will fall upon you like that cotton-carder (Hallaj). You would pull the cotton of conceit from your ear, and begin to boil like the vat in the tavern. From head to toe you would become one like a spindle of yarn, like men, you would abandon both cotton and spindle. Your black hair will become like cotton, neither head nor cotton will remain in your hat. Since you are not worth a single grain of cotton, you will no longer do the carding or sewing. It will card you of yourself, saying 'Away! So that Light may sit in your place.' Beware, O intrusive man, do not become an incarnationist from this meaning I spoke. Incarnation (Hulul) and union (Ittihad) are forbidden here, but the state is one of universal absorption (Istighraq). A lamp, where the radiant sun is, is captive between being and non-being. What room is there for the nine numbers, or accidents, nor bodies, nor parts, nor divisions? Whatever judgment you make, that will be you, you will be the great, the knowing, and the judge. Whatever description you wish to make of God, know that you seek a unique familiar. Whatever you know in describing Him, you read from the notebooks of your own illusion. Since your understanding is you, He is not, if you describe Him, it will not be well. Since His attributes are neither Him nor other than Him, how can you describe His attributes? Know His essence. Know Him by Him, this is your path; this is the way of your meaning-seeking soul.
