مگر می رفت آن دیوانه دل شاد
فتادش چشم بر بقال استاد

بدو گفتا که ای مرد نکو نام
شکرداری سپید و مغز بادام

چنین گفتا که دارم هر دو بسیار
ولیکن تا پدید آید خریدار

بدو دیوانه گفت آخر کجایی
چرا آن هر دو خوش را خوش نخایی

اگر این هر دو بفروشی بصد ناز
ازین هر دو چه خوشتر می خری باز

بیک یک دم که در زیر دل و جانست
که می داند که چه اسرار پنهانست

هزاران بحر پر اسرار کامل
بیک دم می توانی کرد حاصل

ترا این پند بس در هر دو عالم
که برناید زجانت بی خدا دم

اگر تو باز داری پاس انفاس
بسلطانی رسانندت ازین پاس

خدا را یاد کن تا کی ز اشعار
خموشی پیشه کن تا کی ز گفتار

اگرچه شعر در حد کمالست
چو نیکو بنگری حیض الرجالست

یقین می دان که هر حرف از کتابت
بتست و بت بود بی شک حجابت

کنون بیدار شو از خواب مستی
رها کن بعد ازین این بت پرستی

دریغا فوت شد عمری که یک دم
اگر گویی به ارزد هر دو عالم

مرا گر عمر بایستی خریدن
نبودی یک زمانم آرمیدن

همه عمرم اگر یک دم بماندست
همی دانم که صد عالم بماندست

چرا چندین سخن می بایدم راند
چو می دانم که می بربایدم خواند

بگو چندین سخن کی رانمی من
اگر یک حرف بر خود خوانمی من

اگر بودی ازآنجا رنگ و بویم
نبودی رنگ و بوی گفت و گویم

دریغا کانچ دانستم نکردم
غم خود وقت کار خود نخوردم

اگر صد سال پویم راه دین را
ندانم کرد استغفار این را

گر استغفار یک یک دم کنم من
ندانم تا بعمری هم کنم من

ولیکن چون خداوند کریم است
ببخشد گرچه این جرمی عظیم است

عجب نیست ار بفضل جاودانی
بیک بیتم ببخشد رایگانی

English translation

Once, that cheerful madman was walking along, And his eyes fell upon a master grocer. He said to him, 'O man of good name, Do you have white sugar and almond kernels?' He replied thus: 'I have plenty of both, But waiting for a buyer to appear.' The madman said to him, 'Where are you then? Why don't you happily chew both of these pleasant things yourself? If you sell these two with a hundred airs, What will you buy back that is more pleasant than these two?' In every single breath that is beneath the heart and soul, Who knows what hidden secrets exist? Thousands of perfect oceans full of secrets, You can attain in a single breath. This advice is enough for you in both worlds: That no breath should rise from your soul without God. If you keep watch over your breaths, They will raise you to sovereignty from this vigilance. Remember God; how long will you engage in poetry? Make silence your practice; how long will you engage in speech? Although poetry may be at the peak of perfection, When you look closely, it is the menstruation of men. Know for certain that every letter you write Is an idol, and an idol is undoubtedly your veil. Now wake up from the sleep of intoxication, Abandon this idol-worshipping from now on. Alas, a life has passed, where a single breath, If you speak truly, is worth both worlds. If I had to buy back my life, I wouldn't have a single moment of rest. If only a single breath remains of all my life, I know that a hundred worlds still remain. Why must I drive forward so many words, When I know I will be called away? Tell me, when would I ever utter so many words, If I had only read one letter to myself? If I had the color and scent of that place, I would not have the color and scent of conversation. Alas, I did not practice what I knew, I did not grieve for myself when it was time to work. If I travel the path of religion for a hundred years, I do not know how I could ask forgiveness for this. If I ask forgiveness for every single breath, I do not know if I could even do it in a lifetime. But since the Lord is Generous, He will forgive, even though this is a tremendous crime. It is no wonder if, by His eternal grace, He forgives me for free because of a single verse.
