مگر دیوانه ای می شد به راهی
سر خر دید بر پالیزگاهی

بدیشان گفت چون خر شد لگدکوب
چراست این استخوانش بر سر چوب؟

چنین گفتند کای پرسندهٔ راز
برای آنک دارد چشم بد باز

چو شد دیوانه زان معنی خبردار
بدیشان گفت ای مشتی جگرخوار

گر آنستی که این خر زنده بودی
بسی زین کار خر را خنده بودی

شما را مغز خر دادست ایام
از آنید این سر خر، بسته بر دام

نداشت او زنده، چوب از کون خود باز
چگونه مرده دارد چشم بد باز

برو دم درکش و تن زن چه گویی
چو چیزی می ندانی می چه جویی؟

مشو چون سایه در دنبال این کار
که ناید شمع را سایه پدیدار

تو خود سایه برین مفکن که خورشید
برای تو کند چون سایه جاوید

اگر تو پیش کار خویش آیی
ز خود خود را بلایی بیش آیی

وگر تو دم زنی از پرده بیرون
میان پردهٔ دل افکنی خون

مکش چندین کمان بر تیر تدبیر
که از تو بر تو می آید همان تیر

English translation

Perhaps a madman was walking on a path He saw a donkey's head in a melon field He said to them, since the donkey was trampled, Why is its bone on the tip of a stick? They said thus, O inquirer of secrets, So that it keeps the evil eye away. When the madman became aware of this meaning, He said to them, O handful of blood-drinkers! If it were that this donkey was alive, It would have laughed much at this deed. Time has given you the brain of a donkey, That is why you have tied this donkey's head to a snare. It couldn't keep a stick out of its own rear when alive, How can it keep the evil eye away when dead? Go hold your breath and be silent, what are you saying? When you don't know anything, what are you seeking? Do not follow this matter like a shadow, For the shadow does not become visible to the candle. Do not cast your shadow on this, for the sun Will make you like a shadow eternal. If you come forward in your own affairs, You will bring a greater affliction upon yourself from yourself. And if you breathe outside the veil, You will spill blood inside the veil of the heart. Do not draw so many bows against the arrow of destiny, For the same arrow comes to you from yourself.
