بخش ۴ - الحکایه و التمثیل / Section 4 - The Tale and the Parable

یکی دیوانه ای را دید شاهی
نهاده کاسهٔ سر پیش راهی

به مجنون گفت با این کاسه در بر
چه سودا می پزی در کاسهٔ سر ؟!

به شه گفتا که شه! اندیشه کردم
ترا با خویشتن هم پیشه کردم

ندانم کلهٔ چون من گدایی ست !
و یا خود آن چون تو پادشایی ست !

بپیمودم به عمری روی عالم
ترا قسمت سه گز آمد مرا هم

چه گر داری سپاه و ملک و کشور
دو گرده تو خوری دو من، برابر

چو تو همچون منی چندین تک و تاز
چه خواهی کرد؟ از گردن بینداز

همه ار نفکنی از گردنت کل
همه فردا شود در گردنت غل

فکندی همچو سقا آب در پوست
نه آبست این که فردا آتشت اوست

عزیزا غم نگر، غم خواری ات کو ؟
چو بادی عمر شد، بیداری ات کو ! ؟

به یک دم مانده ای، چون دم نماند
نمانی هیچ و هیچت هم نماند

ز راه چشم خون دل بریزان
که خواهی گشت خاک خاک بیزان

اگر گردون نبودی نامساعد
نگشتی خاک چندین سیم ساعد

مخسب ای دل! سخن بپذیر آخر
ز چندین رفته عبرت گیر آخر

بسی بر رفتگان رفتی به صد ناز
بسی بر تو روند آیندگان باز

چه می نازی اگر عمرت درازست
به جان کندن ترا چندین نیازست

اگر عمر تو صد سال است وگر بیست
جزین دم کاندرویی حاصلت چیست ؟

نصیبت گر ترا صد سال داده ست
دمی حالیست دیگرجمله بادست

همه عمرت غمست و عمر کوتاه
به مرگ تلخ شیرین کرد آنگاه

فرو می کرد از غم خون برویم
ندانم این سخن ها چون بگویم

ز بیم مرگ در زندان فانی
بمردم در میان زندگانی

بسا جانا که همچو نیل در تن
همی جوشد درین نیلی نهنبن

چو دیگ عمر سربازست پیوست
اگر چون گربه می یازد به جان دست

چه سازم من که در دنیای ناساز ؟
ندارد گربه شرم و دیگ سرباز

برو ای دل چو دیگی چند جوشی ؟
نهنبن ساز خود را از خموشی

درین دیگ بلا پختی به صد درد
که هستم چون نمک در دیگ درخورد

سیه دل تر ز دیگی ای گنه کار
فرو گیر ای سیه دل دیگت از بار

برون شد دیگت از سر می ستیزی
که در هر دیگ همچون کفچلیزی

چه گویم طرفه مرغی تو به هر کار
که از دیگم برآیی سرنگونسار

به تو هر ساعتی جانی دگر نه
ز لاف خویش دیگی نیز بر نه

ز خوان و کاسهٔ خود چند لافی ؟
ز سودا کاسهٔ سر دار صافی

همه ملک تو و ملک تو یک سر
ز ملکی کم ز گاورس ست کمتر

هر آن ملکی که از جان داری اش دوست
نیرزد هیچ چون مرگ از پی اوست

اگر ملک تو شد صحرای دنیا
سرانجامت دو گز خاکست مأوا

چو بهر خاک زاده ستی ز مادر
برین پشتی چه سازی باغ و منظر ؟

کسی کاو خانه چندان ساخت کاو بود
چو شهدش خانه شیرین و نکو بود

چو جانت شیب خواهد بود در خاک
سر منظر چه افرازی بر افلاک ؟

نئی ز آغاز و انجامت خبردار
میان خاک و خون ماندی گرفتار

نگه کن اول و آخر تو در خویش
که تا از پس چه بود و چیست از پیش ؟

رحم بوده ست جای خون نخستت
به خاک آیی ز خون چون خون بشستت

به اول می شوی از خون پدیدار
به آخر زیر خاک ره گرفتار

میان خاک و خون شادی که جوید ؟
ترا عاقل درین معنی چه گوید ؟

زهی غفلت که با چندین تم و تار
میان خاک وخون برساختی کار

تو گر پاکی و گر ناپاک رفتی
ز خونی آمدی با خاک رفتی

میان خاک و خون شادی چه جویی ؟
نئی جز بنده، آزادی چه جویی ؟

میان چون بندگان در بند محکم
که نبود بی غمی فرزند آدم

اگر آکنده ای از سیم و زر گنج
نخواهی خورد یک دم آب بی رنج

میان دربند کاین در بر گشاده ست
مکن سستی که سختت اوفتاده ست

کجا دارد ترا چندین سخن سود ؟!
برو کاری به دست خود بکن زود

که کاری کان به دست خویش کردی
یکی را صد هزاران بیش کردی

English translation

A king saw a madman Who had placed a skull on the road before him. He said to the madman, 'With this skull in front of you, What crazy thoughts are you cooking up in your head?' The madman replied to the king, 'O king! I was thinking, And comparing you with myself. I do not know if this is the skull of a beggar like me! Or if it is the skull of a king like you! I traveled the face of the earth for a lifetime, Your share will be three yards of shroud, and mine too. What if you possess an army, a kingdom, and a country? If you eat two flatbreads, I eat two, equally. Since you, like me, have so much running around, What will you do? Throw the burden off your neck! If you do not throw all this burden from your neck completely, Tomorrow it will all become shackles around your neck. You have slung it over your shoulder like a water-carrier's skin, This is not water, for tomorrow it will be your fire. O dear one, look at sorrow; where is your endurance? When life has passed like the wind, where is your awakening? You are left with but one breath; when that breath is gone, You will not remain at all, and nothing of yours will remain. Shed the blood of your heart from the pathway of your eyes, For you will turn to dust, sifting through the earth. If the revolving heavens were not unfavorable, So many silver forearms would not have turned to dust. Do not sleep, O heart! Accept my words at last, Take a lesson from so many who have departed, at last. Many departed before those who are gone, with a hundred graces, Many who are to come will walk over you in turn. Why do you boast if your life is long? In giving up your soul, you have so much agony. Whether your life is a hundred years or twenty, Besides this breath in which you exist, what is your harvest? If your destiny has granted you a hundred years, It is but a momentary breath; the rest is all wind. Your whole life is sorrow, and life is short, Then He sweetened it with bitter death. I am shedding blood on my face out of sorrow; I know not how to speak these words. From the fear of death in this mortal prison, I have died in the midst of life. How many a soul, like indigo in the body, Is boiling under this blue lid of the sky. Since the pot of life is always left uncovered, If, like a cat, it reaches out for the soul... What can I do, I who am in this discordant world? The cat has no shame, and the pot is uncovered. Go, O heart, how long will you boil like a pot? Make a lid for yourself out of silence. In this pot of affliction, you cooked with a hundred pains, For I am fitting in the pot, just like salt. More black-hearted than a pot, O sinner! Take your pot off the fire, O black-hearted one! Your pot boiled over, and you struggle, For in every pot you are like a skimmer. What can I say? You are a strange bird in every deed, For you emerge from the pot headfirst. You have a new life every hour, do you not? Do not set up another pot out of your boasting. How long will you boast of your own table and bowl? Keep the skull clear of crazy thoughts. Your whole kingdom, and all your kingdom at once, Is worth less than a single millet seed. Every kingdom that you love from the bottom of your soul, Is worth nothing, since death follows it. Even if your kingdom became the plain of the world, In the end, your abode is two yards of earth. Since you were born from a mother for the sake of the earth, Why do you build gardens and palaces on this back of the earth? Someone who built a house just the size of himself, His house was sweet and good like a honeycomb. Since your soul will eventually slope into the earth, Why do you raise the top of the palace to the heavens? You are unaware of your beginning and your end, You have remained trapped between earth and blood. Look first and last within yourself, So you may see what was before, and what lies ahead. The womb was the place of your first blood, You come to the earth from blood, when blood washed you. At first, you appear from blood, At last, you are trapped under the earth of the road. Between earth and blood, who seeks joy? What does a wise person say to you about this? Alas for the negligence that, with so much darkness, You set up business between earth and blood. Whether you departed pure or impure, You came from blood, and you departed with earth. Between earth and blood, why do you seek joy? You are nothing but a slave; why do you seek freedom? Bound firmly among those who are like slaves, For the child of Adam is not without sorrow. If you have hoarded a treasure of silver and gold, You will not drink one breath of water without pain. In this bondage, where the door is open, Do not be lax, for you have fallen hard. Where do so many words profit you?! Go, quickly do a deed with your own hands. For one deed that you do with your own hands, You have multiplied it a hundred thousand times over.
