مگر آن روستایی بود دلتنگ
بشهر آمد همی زد مطربی چنگ

خوشش آمد که مطرب چنگ بنواخت
کشید او لالکا در مطرب انداخت

سر مطرب شکست او چنگ بفکند
بروت روستایی پاک برکند

چو سوی ده شد آن بیچاره از قهر
ز نادانی بروتی زد فرا شهر

که نزد من ندارد شهر مقدار
ولیکن بر بروتش بد پدیدار

جهان پر شیشه بر هم نهادست
اگر سنگی زنی بر تو فتادست

چو در معنی نه اهل راز باشی
بتاریکی چو مشت انداز باشی

اگر اینجای یک دم می زنی تو
هم اینجا بیخ عالم می زنی تو

چو هفت اندام تو افتاد در دام
چه گویی فارغم از هفت اندام

اگر سر کژ کند یک موی بر تو
هزاران درد آرد روی بر تو

اگر گردد یک انگشتت بریده
ز عجز خود شوی پرده دریده

درین نه طشت خوان در گفت و گویی
بماندی همچو منجی در سبویی

تو خود در چه حسابی وز کجایی
که تو چون شیشه زیر آسیایی

نمی دانی که در بازار فطرت
بجز حق نیست بازرگان قدرت

تو پنداری که می آیی ز جایی
زهی پندار تو ناخوش بلایی

چو خفاشی که از روزن برآید
ز کنج آستان بیشش درآید

بگردد گرد باغ و راغ لختی
نشیند بر سر هر سر درختی

اگرموری سری یابد ز جایی
چنان داند که گشت او پادشایی

بجز خود را نبیند در میانه
بمویی شاد گردد از زمانه

ولی چون آفتاب آتشین روی
نهد از آسمان سوی زمین روی

نماید در دل خفاش دستان
گریزان شیر می ریزد ز پستان

الا ای روز و شب مانند خفاش
شده هم رغم این یک مشت اوباش

بمویی چند چون خفاش قانع
ز کوری عمر شیرین کرده ضایع

چو شب پر روز کوری بازمانده
شبان روزی اسیر آز مانده

نه روی آفتاب از دور دیده
نه چشمت رشته تای نور دیده

نیندیشی که چون خورشید جبار
ز برج وحدتی آید پدیدار

دلت شایستگی ناداده جان را
چگونه تاب آرد نور آن را

برو شایستگی خویش کن ساز
چو ذره پیش آن خورشید شو باز

برآ ای ذره زین روزن که داری
که نیست این خانه بس روشن که داری

ترا رفتن ازین روزن صوابست
که صحرای جهان پر آفتابست

تو می گویی که نور من چنانست
که کس از نور من قدرم ندانست

سخن از قدر خود تا چند رانی
اگر خواهی که قدر خود بدانی

کفی خاک سیه بر گیر از راه
نقش کن پس ببادش ده هم آنگاه

بدان کاغاز و انجام تو در کار
کفی خاکست اگر هستی خبردار

تو مشتی خاک و چندینی تغیر
تفکر کن مکن چندین تکبر

تکبر می کنی ای پارهٔ خون
ز چندین ره گذر افتاده بیرون

برو از سر بنه کبر و بر اندیش
که تا تو کیستی و چیست در پیش

خوشی دل بر جهان بنهاده ای تو
ببین تا خود کجا افتاده ای تو

چنین چرخی که گردتست گردان
چنین گویی که زیرتست میدان

اگر تو رفع و خفض آن نبینی
میان هر دو ساکن چون نشینی

رهی جویی بفکرت همچو مردان
بگردی در مضیق چرخ گردان

بسوی آشیان خود کنی ساز
درین عالم بجای خود رسی باز

بگردی گرد این مردار خانه
نترسی از طلسمات زمانه

چه گر، دریا همی بینی تو خاموش
ولی می ترس کاید زود در جوش

English translation

Perhaps there was a distressed villager, He came to the city and a minstrel was playing the harp. He liked the way the minstrel played the harp, He took off his shoe and threw it at the minstrel. The minstrel's head broke, he threw down the harp, And he completely pulled out the villager's mustache. When that poor man went towards the village out of anger, Out of ignorance he boasted against the city, Saying, 'To me, the city has no value,' But it was apparent on his mustache. The world is full of glass stacked on top of each other, If you throw a stone, it falls upon you. Since in reality you are not a person of secrets, You are like someone throwing punches in the dark. If you strike a single breath here, You strike the root of the world right here. When your seven limbs fall into the trap, How can you say, 'I am free from the seven limbs?' If a single hair on you goes awry, Thousands of pains will face you. If one of your fingers gets cut, You will be torn apart by your own helplessness. In these nine heavenly bowls you are in discussion, You remained like a bee in a pitcher. What account are you in, and where are you from? For you are like glass under a millstone. Do you not know that in the bazaar of creation, There is no merchant of power except the Truth. You think that you come from somewhere, Oh, your thought is an unpleasant affliction. Like a bat that comes out of the window, It comes in from the corner of the threshold. It flutters around the garden and meadow for a while, It sits on the top of every tree. If an ant finds a prominence from somewhere, It thinks it has become a king. It sees no one but itself in the middle, It becomes happy with a hair from the world. But when the fiery-faced sun, Turns its face from the sky towards the earth. It shows tricks in the heart of the bat, Fleeing, it drops milk from its breast. Oh you, who day and night are like a bat, Having become the opponent of this handful of ruffians. Content with a few hairs like a bat, Out of blindness, you have wasted your sweet life. Like a bat, you have remained day-blind, Day and night, you have remained a captive of greed. Neither have you seen the face of the sun from afar, Nor has your eye seen a single thread of light. You do not think that when the Almighty Sun, Appears from the tower of unity. Your heart, not having given worthiness to the soul, How will it endure its light? Go, prepare your worthiness, Return like an atom before that sun. Rise, oh atom, from this window you have, For this house you have is not very bright. It is right for you to go from this window, For the desert of the world is full of the sun. You say that my light is such, That no one knew my worth from my light. How long will you speak of your own worth? If you want to know your own worth, Take a handful of black dust from the road, Make a form and then give it to the wind right away. Know that your beginning and end in this matter, Is a handful of dust, if you are aware. You are a handful of dust and have so much variation, Reflect, do not be so arrogant. You act arrogantly, oh piece of blood, Having fallen out from so many passages. Go, put aside your arrogance and think, About who you are and what is ahead. You have happily set your heart on the world, See where you yourself have fallen. Such a wheel that is turning around you, You say that the field is under you. If you do not see its rising and falling, How can you sit still between the two? Seek a path with your thought like men, Wander in the strait of the turning wheel. Make preparations towards your own nest, In this world you will reach your own place again. You wander around this carrion house, Do not fear the talismans of time. What if you see the sea silent, But fear that it will soon boil over.
