The Allegory of the Villager and the Harpist in Asrar Nameh

In Section 4 of Discourse 15 in Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet recounts the tale of a distressed villager who, upon hearing a harpist in the city, loses control. He throws his shoes at the musician, breaks the harp, and tears out his own mustache. Attar uses this story to illustrate a deeper philosophical and spiritual truth, comparing the world to a fragile glass structure. The allegory highlights how ignorant and reactive behavior, stemming from a lack of inner wisdom and spiritual maturity, ultimately disrupts the delicate interconnectedness of existence and brings harm upon oneself.
