بر محمود شد دیوانه ای خوار
که هستم بر ایازت عاشق زار

بدو محمود گفت ای خوار مانده
ز بهر لقمه ای غم خوار مانده

همه عالم مرا زیر نگین است
که ملک من همه روی زمین است

شمار لشگرم سیصد هزار است
سلاح و اسب و گنجم بی شمار است

بر من چارصد پیل است دربند
ندیمان و حکیمان هنر مند

منش با این همه می دوست دارم
همه مغزم نه چون تو پوست دارم

مراست این ملکت و این کامکار ی
من این دارم که گفتم ، تو چه داری ؟

بخندید آن زمان دیوانه و گفت
که نتوانی به گل خورشید بنهفت

تو ای غافل کژی در عشق و من راست
ز دیوانه شنو شاها سخن راست

منم بس گرسنه تو سیر نانی
مرا بی هیچ شک دیوانه خوانی

هم اکنون آتش عشقم به یک راه
بسوزد جملهٔ ملکت به یک آه

ندارد عشق تو با عشق من کار
تو عاشق نیستی هستی جهان دار

به دل چون عاشق صد چیز باشی
نباشی مرد عاشق ، حیز باشی

مرا در دل چو نه کار ست و نه بار
همه دل داده ام به او به یک بار

همه دل عاشق روی ایاز است
هنوزش بندهٔ ناحق شناس است

یکی نیکو مثل زد پیر هندو
که این و آن نیاید راست هر دو

چو آن خر بنده بر یک خر نشستی
دگر خر را رسن بر دست بستی

ترا دل در دو خر بینم نهاده
نترسی کز دو خر مانی پیاده

به صد نوعت بگفتم شرح این راه
ولی نیست از یکی جان تو آگاه

دلت گر زین همه حرفی شنودی
به چندینی سخن حاجت نبودی

خلل ها زین همه دل های مرده ست
که دل ها را هوا از راه برده ست

همه بر ناخنی بتوان نبشتش
ولی آسان بر او نتوان گذشتن

زهی اسرار ما ، اسرار دان کو ؟
یکی بیننده داننده جان کو ؟

هزاران جان فدای آن عظیمی
کزین اسرار می یابد نسیمی

کسی کاو علم لوت و لات داند
بلاشک این سخن طامات داند

ز چشم کور بینایی نیاید
که از خفاش جویایی نیاید

فلک این را یکایک کرده دارد
عجایب ها بسی در پرده دارد

نه چندان ست در پرده شگفتش
که بر انگشت بتوانی گرفتش

به زیر پرده بی حد راز دارد
نمی گوید یکی و آواز دارد

بسی سر رشتهٔ این راز جستم
ندیدم گرچه عمری باز جستم

به پیش زیرکان نامبردار
درین اندیشه ها کردیم بسیار

نه آن راز نهانی روی بنمود
نه مقصود ی سر یک موی بنمود

مگر این راز اینجا گفتنی نیست
در اسرار اینجا سفتنی نیست

English translation

A wretched madman went to Mahmud, Saying, 'I am desperately in love with your Ayaz.' Mahmud said to him, 'O wretched one, Left sorrowful for the sake of a morsel! The whole world is under my signet ring, For my kingdom is the entire face of the earth. The count of my army is three hundred thousand, My weapons, horses, and treasure are countless. I have four hundred elephants tied up, And skillful courtiers and wise men. With all this, I love him [Ayaz], I am all kernel, not merely shell like you. Mine is this kingdom and this success, I have what I said, but what do you have?' The madman laughed then and said, 'You cannot hide the sun with mud! You, O oblivious one, are crooked in love, and I am straight; Hear the straight truth from the madman, O King! I am very hungry, you are satiated with bread; You undoubtedly call me a madman. Right now, the fire of my love, in one go, Could burn your entire kingdom with a single sigh! Your love has no business with my love, You are not a lover, you are a world-possessor. Since in your heart you are the lover of a hundred things, You are not a man of love, you are a coward. Since I have neither business nor burden in my heart, I have given my whole heart to him all at once. My whole heart is the lover of Ayaz's face, Yet he is still an ungrateful slave. An old Hindu struck a good proverb: "This and that cannot both be right." When that muleteer sat on one donkey, He tied the rope of the other donkey to his hand. I see your heart set on two donkeys; Do you not fear you might be left on foot from both donkeys? I told you the explanation of this path in a hundred ways, But your soul is not aware of even one. If your heart had heard a word of all this, There would have been no need for so much speech. The flaws are all from these dead hearts, For lust has led the hearts astray. One could write it all on a fingernail, But one cannot easily pass over it. Oh, our secrets! Where is the knower of secrets? Where is a seeing, knowing soul? Thousands of souls be sacrificed for that great one, Who catches a breeze of these secrets. Anyone who knows the science of food and idols, Will undoubtedly consider these words as nonsense. Vision does not come from a blind eye, For seeking does not come from a bat. The heavens have kept this sorted one by one, It holds many wonders behind the veil. Its wonders behind the veil are not so few, That you could count them on your fingers. Behind the veil, it holds boundless secrets, It does not say one, yet it has a voice. I sought the thread of this secret much, I did not see it, though I searched for a lifetime. Before renowned, astute people, We pondered much upon these thoughts. Neither did that hidden secret show its face, Nor did the goal show a hair's breadth. Perhaps this secret is not to be told here, The pearl of secrets is not to be pierced here.'
