برون شد ابلهی با شمع از در
بدید از چرخ خورشید منور

ز جهل خود چنان پنداشت جاوید
که بی این شمع نتوان دید خورشید

بدو بشناس او را و فنا شو
در آن عین فنا عین بقا شو

تو باقی گردی ار گردی تو فانی
تو مانی جمله گر بی تو تو مانی

English translation

A fool went out the door with a candle, He saw the luminous sun in the sky. In his ignorance, he continually imagined, That without this candle, the sun could not be seen. Know Him through Him, and become annihilated, In that very annihilation, become the essence of subsistence. You will become eternal if you become annihilated, You will remain as the whole if you remain without yourself.
