بخش ۱ - المقاله الثانی عشر / Section 1 - The Twelfth Discourse

الا ای سر به غفلت در نهاده
به دنیا دین خود بر باد داده

که گفتت داوری کن با فلک تو ؟
جگر خون کن ز مشتی بی نمک تو ؟

ترا اندوه نان و جامه تا کی ؟
ترا از نام و ننگ عامه تا کی ؟

ز بس که اندیشهٔ بیهوده کردی
نهاد خویش را فرسوده کردی

نهاد خویش قربان کن به تسلیم
به پیش این سخن بنشین به تعلیم

ز سر در ابجد معنی درآموز
ز نور شرع شمع دل برافروز

بسوزان نیم شب این سقف شب رنگ
برون پر زین کبوتر خانهٔ تنگ

گر آید شربت غیبی به حلقت
نماند نیز نام و ننگ خلقت

تورا با مال دنیا دین بباید
چنانکت آن بباید این بباید

تو دین جویی دل از دنیا شده مست
ندانی کاین فراهم ندهدت دست

دل تو در دو رو یی شد گرفتار
تو ماندی زیر کوه عجب و پندار

یکی رویت به دنیا کرده ای تو
دگر رویت به دین آورده ای تو

به ترک این دو رو یی گوی آخر
یکی را بس بود یک روی آخر

دلت را از دو رویی شین باشد
که شر الناس ذوالوجهین باشد

English translation

O you who have bowed your head in heedlessness, Who have cast your faith to the wind for the world! Who told you to contend with the heavens? To make your heart bleed over a handful of tasteless people? How long will you grieve for bread and clothing? How long will you care about the honor and shame of the commoners? Because you have engaged in so many vain thoughts, You have worn down your own nature. Sacrifice your nature in submission, Sit before these words to learn. Learn the alphabet of meaning anew, Ignite the candle of the heart with the light of the Law. Burn this night-colored roof at midnight, Fly out of this narrow pigeon-house. If a draught from the unseen reaches your throat, No name or shame of creation will remain for you. You want religion along with worldly wealth, Just as you want that, you want this. You seek religion while your heart is drunk on the world, You do not know that this cannot be achieved together. Your heart has become trapped in hypocrisy, You have remained under the mountain of conceit and illusion. You have turned one face to the world, And the other face you have brought to religion. Speak of abandoning this two-facedness at last, One face is enough for one person, after all. Two-facedness is a disgrace to your heart, For the worst of people is the two-faced one.
