چو خواهد شد دورخ در خاک ریزان
دورخ در خاک مالید ای عزیزان

براندیشید از آن ساعت که در خاک
فرو ریزد دو رخ چون برگ گل پاک

در آن ساعت نه بتوانید نالید
نه رخ در پیش او در خاک مالید

کنون باری شما را قدرتی هست
شبان روزی بدین سان حضرتی هست

چرا در کار حق سستی نمایید
اگر مردید پس چستی نمایید

بمردی آنگه آید افتخارت
که تو کاری کنی کاید بکارت

تو خواهی تا بسی طاعت کنی تو
ولی از جهل یک ساعت کنی تو

نخواهد ماند با تو هیچ هم راه
مگر سوز دل و آه سحرگاه

تو خود هرگز شبی در درد این کار
نداری خویش را تا روز بیمار

مخسب ای دوست تا بیدارگردی
مگر شایستهٔ اسرار گردی

چرا خفتی تو چون در عمر بسیار
نخواهی شد ز خواب مرگ بیدار

بروبا گورت افکن خواب خود را
مگر بیدار گردانی خرد را

ببین کین آفتاب مانده عاجز
نکرد از خواب چشمی گرم هرگز

گرت چون آفتاب این درد باشد
ز بی خوابیت رویی زرد باشد

الا ای روز و شب در خواب رفته
برآمد صبح پیری و تو خفته

نمی ترسی که مرگت خفته گیرد
دلت را خفته و آشفته گیرد

تو درخوابی و بیداران برفتند
عزیزان وفاداران برفتند

تویی در کیسهٔ این دهر خود رای
بمانده هم چو سیم قلب برجای

ز غفلت بر سر غوغا بماندی
سری پر لاف و پر سودا بماندی

گرفتم شب نخفتی صبح گاهان
خراخفتی چو خفتی دیرگاهان

مکن در وقت صبح ای دوست سستی
که داری ایمنی و تن درستی

چو پیدا شد نسیم صبح گاهی
در آن ساعت بیابی هرچ خواهی

هر آن خلعت کزان درگاه پوشند
چوآید صبح دم آنگاه پوشند

چو شب از صبح گردد حلقه درگوش
درآید ذرهای خاک درجوش

دلی کو از حقیقت بوی دارد
ببیداری آن دم خوی دارد

ترا گر سوی آن درگاه راهیست
بوقت صبح خون آلود آهیست

دلا آن دم دمی از خواب دم زن
بآهی حلقهٔ را بر حرم زن

برآر از سینهٔ پرخون دمی پاک
که بسیاری دمد صبح و تو در خاک

بگیر آن حلقه را در وقت شبگیر
دل شوریده را درکش بزنجیر

و یا بند از دل دیوانه بر گیر
خوشی فریاد مشتاقانه برگیر

زفان بگشای با حق راز می گوی
غم دیرینهٔ دل باز می گوی

خوشی بگری چو باران در عتابی
مگر برخیزدت از دل حجابی

در آن دم گر شود آهی میسر
ز دنیا و آنچ در دنیاست خوشتر

عزیزا عمر شد در یاب آخر
شبان روزی مشو در خواب آخر

بشب خواب و بروزت خواب غفلت
که شرمت باد ای غرقاب غفلت

مخسب ای خفته آخر از گنه بس
چرا خفتی که گورت خوابگه بس

هزاران جان پر نور عزیزان
فدای سجده گاه صبح خیزان

زهی لذت که در شبهای تاری
نیاز خویش بر حق عرضه داری

خوشی در خاک می مالی رخ خویش
بزاری می گزاری پاسخ خویش

همه آفاق آرامی گرفته
ره تو با حق انجامی گرفته

گشاده پیش او دست نیازی
گهی در گریهٔ گه در نمازی

بنه پایی که در پیش چنان کس
خلایق خفته و تو باشی و بس

ببستر غافلان باز اوفتاده
تو و حق هر دو هم راز اوفتاده

چنین شب گر کند یزدان کرامت
نیاری گفت شکرش تا قیامت

خوشا با حق شب تاریک بودن
ز خود دور و بدو نزدیک بودن

ازین بهتر چه کار و بار داری
که یک شب او بیدار داری

چو صد شب از هوا بیدار بودی
بشهوت ریزهٔ در کار بودی

شبی بیدار دار آخر خدا را
چو صد شب داشتی نفس و هوا را

English translation

Since both cheeks will crumble into the dust, Rub both cheeks in the dust [in prostration], O dear ones! Think about that hour when in the earth Both cheeks will crumble completely like rose petals. In that hour you will neither be able to lament, Nor rub your cheeks in the dust before Him. Now, however, you have some power, Day and night, you have access to such a Presence. Why do you show laziness in the work of Truth? If you are men, then show agility! Your pride in manliness will come then, When you do a work that will be of use to you. You wish to do much obedience, But out of ignorance you do it for only one hour. No companion will remain with you, Except the burning of the heart and the morning sigh. You yourself, never for a night in the pain of this work Keep yourself suffering until the day. Do not sleep, O friend, so that you may awaken, Perhaps you will become worthy of the secrets. Why do you sleep? For in the long span of time You will not wake from the sleep of death. Go and cast your sleep into the grave, Perhaps you will awaken your intellect. See how this helpless sun Has never warmed its eyes with sleep. If you have this pain like the sun, From sleeplessness your face will be pale. Oh you who have gone to sleep day and night, The dawn of old age has risen, and you are asleep. Do you not fear that death will take you while sleeping, And take your heart asleep and confused? You are asleep, and the awakened ones have gone; The dear ones, the loyal ones, have gone. You are in the purse of this self-willed age, Left behind like counterfeit silver. Out of heedlessness, you remained at the head of the tumult, You remained with a head full of boasting and vain desires. Suppose you did not sleep at night; at dawn, You slept like a donkey, as you slept late. Do not be lazy at the time of dawn, O friend, While you have safety and physical health. When the morning breeze appears, In that hour you will find whatever you desire. Every robe of honor that they wear from that court, They put on when the dawn arrives. When the night becomes a slave with a ring in its ear to the morning, The atoms of dust begin to boil in excitement. A heart that has a scent of the Truth, Is accustomed to wakefulness at that moment. If you have a path toward that court, At the time of dawn, it is a blood-stained sigh. O heart, at that moment, hold your breath from sleep for a moment, And with a sigh, knock on the ring of the sanctuary. Bring forth a pure breath from your blood-filled chest, For the morning will dawn many times while you are in the dust. Grasp that knocker at the time of pre-dawn, Draw the turbulent heart into chains. Or remove the bond from the mad heart, And joyfully let out an eager cry. Open your tongue, speak your secrets with the Truth, Tell the ancient sorrow of the heart again. Cry joyfully like rain in a reprimand, So that perhaps a veil may be lifted from your heart. In that moment, if a sigh becomes possible, It is better than the world and whatever is in it. O dear one, life is gone; realize this finally! Do not be asleep day and night, finally! Sleep at night, and during the day the sleep of negligence! May you be ashamed, O drowning pool of negligence! Do not sleep, O sleeper, enough of sin at last! Why do you sleep, when your grave is enough of a sleeping place? Thousands of luminous souls of the dear ones Are a sacrifice to the place of prostration of the early risers. What a delight that in the dark nights You offer your needs to the Truth. You joyfully rub your cheek in the dust, And tearfully you submit your answer. All the horizons have taken to rest, While your path with the Truth has found fulfillment. You have opened the hands of need before Him, Sometimes in weeping, sometimes in prayer. Set foot, for before such a One, The creations are asleep and it is only you, and that is enough. The negligent ones have fallen back into their beds, While you and the Truth have both become confidants. If God grants the grace of such a night, You will not be able to utter its thanks until the Day of Resurrection. How joyous it is to be with the Truth in the dark night, Far from oneself and close to Him. What business or affair do you have better than this, That you keep awake for Him for one night? Since you stayed awake a hundred nights out of desire, You were busy in fragments of lust. Keep awake for one night, finally, for God, Since you kept a hundred nights for your lower self and desires.
