شنودم من که فردوسی طوسی
که کرد او در حکایت بی فسوسی

به بیست و پنج سال از نوک خامه
به سر می برد نقش شاهنامه

به آخر چون شد آن عمرش به آخر
ابوالقاسم که بد شیخ اکابر

اگرچه بود پیری پر نیاز او
نکرد از راه دین بر وی نماز او

چنین گفت او که فردوسی بسی گفت
همه در مدح گبری ناکسی گفت

به مدح گبر کان عمری بسر برد
چو وقت رفتن آمد بی خبر مرد

مرا در کار او برگ ریا نیست
نمازم بر چنین شاعر روا نیست

چو فردوسی مسکین را ببردند
به زیر خاک تاریکش سپردند

در آن شب شیخ او را دید در خواب
که پیش شیخ آمد دیده پر آب

زمرد رنگ تاجی سبز بر سر
لباسی سبزتر از سبزه در بر

به پیش شیخ بنشست و چنین گفت
که ای جان تو با نور یقین جفت

نکردی آن نماز از بی نیازی
که می ننگ آمدت زین نانمازی

خدای تو جهانی پر فرشته
همه از فیض روحانی سرشته

فرستاد اینت لطف کار سازی
که تا کردند بر خاکم نمازی

خطم دادند بر فردوس اعلی
که فردوسی به فردوس است اولی

خطاب آمد که ای فردوسی پیر
اگر راندت ز پیش آن طوسی پیر

پذیرفتم منت تا خوش بخفتی
بدان یک بیت توحیدم که گفتی

مشو نومید از فضل الهی
مده بر فضل ما بخل گواهی

یقین می دان چو هستی مرد اسرار
که عاصی اندک ست و فضل بسیار

گر آمرزم به یک ره خلق را پاک
نیامرزیده باشم جز کفی خاک

خداوندا تو می دانی که عطار
همه توحید تو گوید در اشعار

ز نور تو شعاعی می نماید
چو فردوسی فقاعی می گشاید

چو فردوسی ببخشش رایگان تو
به فضل خود به فردوسش رسان تو

به فردوسی که علیین ش خوانند
مقام صدق و قصر دین ش خوانند

English translation

I heard that Ferdowsi of Tus, Who composed tales without mockery, For twenty-five years with the tip of his pen, Brought the design of the Shahnameh to completion. In the end, when his life came to an end, Abu'l-Qasim, who was the sheikh of the great ones, Although he was a very devout elder, Out of religious conviction, he did not perform the funeral prayer over him. He said thus: 'Ferdowsi spoke at length, But all he said was in praise of the lowly Zoroastrians. He spent a lifetime praising Zoroastrians; When the time of departure came, he died unaware. I have no inclination for hypocrisy in his affair; My prayer over such a poet is not permissible.' When they bore away the poor Ferdowsi, And entrusted him beneath the dark earth, That night, the Sheikh saw him in a dream, Approaching the Sheikh with tear-filled eyes, An emerald-colored green crown on his head, And garments greener than grass upon his body. He sat before the Sheikh and spoke thus: 'O you whose soul is coupled with the light of certainty! You did not perform that prayer out of your independence, For you felt ashamed of this non-praying one. Your God sent a world full of angels, All formed from spiritual grace. He sent them—what gracious provision!— So that they performed a prayer over my grave. They gave me a decree for the highest Paradise, Saying, "Ferdowsi is most worthy of Paradise." An address came: "O old Ferdowsi! Even if that elder of Tus drove you away, I have accepted you, that you may sleep peacefully, Because of that one verse of monotheism you spoke." Do not despair of Divine grace; Do not bear witness of stinginess against Our grace. Know for certain, as you are a man of secrets, That the sinner is small and the grace is immense. If I forgive the entire creation completely at once, I will have forgiven nothing but a handful of dust. O Lord! You know that Attar Speaks entirely of Your oneness in his poems. He displays a ray from Your light; Like Ferdowsi, he opens a bubble. Like Ferdowsi, forgive him freely; By Your grace, bring him to Paradise. To a Paradise that they call 'Illiyyin, Which they call the station of truth and the palace of faith.'
