The Allegory of the Rag-Picker and Worldly Attachments in Asrar Nameh

In this allegory from Attar's Asrar Nameh, a man devotes his life to gathering discarded rags until his house is full of them. A sudden spark eventually sets the house ablaze, destroying both the accumulated rags and the man himself. This parable serves as a warning against the obsessive pursuit and hoarding of worldly attachments, which are ultimately worthless and bring about spiritual and physical ruin. Attar teaches that death does not automatically liberate the soul from these burdens; instead, the person remains trapped in suffering and torment due to their lifelong material attachments.
