The Allegory of the Rogue's Pawn and True Worth in Asrar Nameh

In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet presents an allegory of a rogue (rend) who attempts to pawn his own person for a jug of wine, only to be dismissed by the tavern-keeper as utterly worthless. Attar uses this narrative to deliver a profound didactic lesson: a human being's true value is not found in their mere physical existence or empty words, but is entirely determined by their knowledge ('ilm) and their actions (kerdar). The poem emphasizes that without the acquisition of spiritual wisdom and righteous deeds, an individual is essentially destitute and holds no genuine worth.
