The Allegory of the Stone and the Salve in Mosibat Nameh

In this poem from Attar's Mosibat Nameh, Luqman uses the metaphor of the stone and the burnt wood (salve) to teach Abu Sa'id of Mehne about the necessity of spiritual hardship. The stone represents the blows of trials and tribulations that shatter the ego, while the burnt wood represents the divine comfort and healing that follows. Luqman explains that spiritual poverty (faqr) and ultimate relief cannot be attained without experiencing these painful trials, as seeking only comfort prevents the seeker from progressing on the path.
