بوسعید مهنه در آغاز کار
پیش لقمان رفت روزی بی قرار

سنگ در یک دست می افراشت او
سوخته در دست دیگر داشت او

شیخ گفتش چیست سنگ و سوخته
گفت تا گردانمت آموخته

میزنم این سنگ بر سر محکمت
سوخته برمینهم چون مرهمت

زانکه این دردی که این ساعت تراست
این چنین درمانش خواهد گشت راست

گه ز ضرب او جراحت میرسد
گه ز مرهم نیز راحت میرسد

گر ز ضرب او جراحت نبودت
تا ابد اومید راحت نبودت

راحت خود را شدی پیوسته دوست
بی جراحت نیز فقرت آرزوست

English translation

Abu Sa'id of Mehne, at the beginning of his path, Went one day to Luqman, restless and distressed. He (Luqman) was raising a stone in one hand, And held burnt cloth in the other. The Sheikh asked him, 'What are the stone and the burnt cloth?' He replied, 'So that I may teach you a lesson, I will strike this stone firmly on your head, And apply the burnt cloth as your salve. Because for this affliction you have at this hour, Such a treatment will prove to be right. Sometimes from His blow, a wound is delivered, And sometimes from His salve, comfort arrives. If you do not suffer a wound from His blow, You will have no hope of comfort for eternity. You have constantly been a lover of your own comfort; Yet without a wound, you desire spiritual poverty!'
