The Allegory of the Stoned Madman and the Hail in Asrar Nameh

In Attar's Asrar Nameh, the tale of a madman (or "heartless" one) being pelted by stones from children and hail from the sky serves as an allegory for the absolute transcendence of the Divine and the insignificance of human ego. When the man complains that heaven has joined the children in tormenting him, he is rebuked and told that the exalted Sun does not lower itself to the level of earthly complaints. This illustrates the Sufi concept of divine independence (Istighna) and teaches that true seekers must endure trials without expecting the Divine to conform to their personal grievances.
