This allegory from Attar's Mosibat Nameh tells of a thief who enters the house of the Sufi saint Rabia al-Adawiyya while she is sleeping. When the thief attempts to steal her cloak, he finds the exit vanished, only for it to reappear when he replaces the garment. A celestial voice (Hatif) informs him that while the saint may be 'drunk in sleep,' her Divine Friend remains awake and watchful. The story illustrates the concept of divine protection (wilayah) and the constant vigilance of God over those who maintain sincere friendship with Him.
