The Biological Analogy in Malthusian Theory

A core tenet of Malthus's population theory is the treatment of human populations as being subject to the same natural laws as animal populations. This perspective posits that, like other species, human populations will expand when their means of subsistence increase. This idea was not originated by Malthus; for example, the earlier Irish economist Richard Cantillon had already articulated a similar principle.
