1. The Friend as an Eye and a Cleanser

Jami describes a true friend as someone who washes away grief and sorrow through kindness and generosity. Using the metaphor of an eye, he argues that just as one would immediately remove a tiny, irritating hair from their eye, a friend must quickly and gently rectify any moral fault they perceive in their companion, rather than ignoring it.

2. Gentle and Active Rectification

A companion should act like protective eyelashes (mizhgan), defending their friend from external harm while remaining vigilant. When a fault is spotted, it must be removed through either constructive words or corrective actions (qawl ya fe'l), ensuring the friend's moral purity and growth.
