English translation
A man must be a seeker of a friend, And when he finds a friend, he must be a cleanser of that friend. He washes with the water of grace and the cloud of generosity The dust of grief and sorrow from his friend's mind. If any dust settles upon his friend's skirt, That dust becomes a pain in his own heart. Until he shakes that dust off his friend's skirt, He cannot pull back his feet and sit at ease. A friend is like an eye: if, through lust or anger, You see a single hair fall into the eye, Quickly pluck that hair from the eye, Do not regard a hair in it lightly out of ignorance. For a troublesome hair inside the eye Ultimately becomes the source of weeping. The briar-patch of eyelashes around the eye Closes the path to stubble and thorns, So that from the outside, a sudden painful affliction Does not find its way into the pupil of the eye. Since a friend is like the eye, you should be the eyelashes; Be around him actively and openly, like eyelashes. Ward off any harm that from any direction Turns its face toward that bright eye. Do not scratch it moment by moment out of meanness and baseness Like an ingrown eyelash. An ingrown eyelash is an affliction to the eye; The eye has suffered harm from it every moment. If you leave it, it will blind the eye; And if you try to pull it, pain and suffering will intensify. Indeed, even if a hundred times you seek a cure by plucking it, It will sprout and grow back again. Neither can you escape from it by plucking, Nor can you sit patiently through its irritation. Unpleasant, self-admiring egotists Are like ingrown eyelashes in the eye. Keep your eye safe from seeing them, Lest you suffer harm from their sight. Draw your skirt away from the fire of their deceit, Before that moment when it burns your harvest. They have kindled the fire of deceit, And they have burned the harvests of many people. First, they declare their devotion, And they puff up with submission and obedience. Wherever you step on the path and passage, They lay down their heads there with devotion. And if you raise your hand to harm them, They will bow their necks before you. If you strike them with a stone, they will call it a gem, And place it upon their head like a crown, Saying, 'That which comes from that hand and palm, God forbid that anyone should be pained by it! Your affliction is the key to our comfort, Your humiliation is the increase of our fortune. Our companionship is for God's sake and in God, Our affection is not driven by self-interest. The pain of affliction from the friends of God Is comfort-increasing and pain-dispelling. Their branding is a garden, and their pain is a treasure, Their treasure, out of generosity, is an evaluator of gems. We do not become vexed by their vexation, We bear their wrath with grace. Their wrath is for the sake of trial, And trial is a grace and a favor.' He who has doubt in pure gold Applies a touchstone to test it. When on the touchstone it proves to be of full value, The wise person purchases it at a high price. Without touchstones in this house of illusion, How could the genuine gold be distinguished from the counterfeit? They tell tales of the disciples, Saying that so-and-so was a man and manly, He bore the Sheikh's trial with patience, And opened the door of fortune to himself. Of this sort, a thousand lies and exaggerations They will speak to you, and you, with a pure mind, Will think all of them to be truthful, And accept their lies as truth. You will sit down, stretch your beard wide, And loosen your tongue in pleasant conversation. You will make everyone your confidant, Sharing your heart's secrets with all. With everyone—whether master or beggar— You will mix together like sugar and milk. When things go on in this manner for a while, The bond will grow strong from every side. However, through various trials, The deceptions will emerge from behind the veil. Those self-interests that they harbored in their heads Will become manifest through their words and deeds. Their outward states will become Like 'the Day when secrets are laid bare.' The malice of their character, from their appearance and faces, Will become manifest to you, one by one. When their motives become clear to you, You will become the mortal enemy of those friends. When self-interest unpacks its baggage, The room for friendship becomes narrow. Loyalty and harmony pack up and leave the heart, While hatred and hypocrisy take up residence in the breast. Yet, for the sake of past rights, You keep it hidden within your breast. You feel ashamed that after such companionship You should open your lips in hatred and spite. Your heart also suffers from this hypocrisy, For a thousand pains reach you from your own hypocrisy. Moment by moment, you devise some trick, To escape from them through some pretext. They bring forward a hundred deceits and ruses, And render your pretexts like wind. From every side, they raise a hundred pretexts To mix with you once again. You try to pass by those tyrannical companions, But what is strange is that they will not let go of you. You cannot escape from them in any way; You are like a swimmer struggling with a bear.
