The Concept of Mutaba'at and Divine Love in Jami's Haft Awrang
In Section 163 of the Subhat al-Abrar (from the Haft Awrang), Jami outlines the mystical doctrine of mutaba'at (emulation and following of the Prophet) as the essential vehicle for attaining Divine Love (mahabbah). Drawing on the Quranic verse 3:31, Jami asserts that proximity to God is strictly contingent upon following the Prophet. Spiritual self-effacement in the Prophet's path leads the seeker to the supreme spiritual state of being beloved by God (yuhbibkumullah). Jami employs the allegory of a treasure seeker who must follow the physical footprints left on the path to a hidden treasury; any deviation from these prophetic marks results in wandering astray and failing to reach the divine destination.
