The Concept of the Valley of Independence (Estighna) in The Conference of the Birds
In Farid al-Din Attar's The Conference of the Birds, the Valley of Independence (Wadi-ye Estighna) is the fourth of the seven valleys the birds must traverse. It represents a state of absolute divine self-sufficiency and detachment. In this valley, the seeker realizes that the Divine requires nothing from creation; entire worlds, oceans, and heavens are utterly insignificant compared to God's majesty. The pilgrim must consequently cultivate a profound sense of independence from all worldly and spiritual attachments, recognizing that true fulfillment comes from needing nothing but the Divine.
