The Concept of the Valley of Poverty and Annihilation (Faqr and Fana) in The Conference of the Birds
In Farid al-Din Attar's The Conference of the Birds, the Valley of Poverty and Annihilation (Wadi-ye Faqr o Fana) is the seventh and final valley the birds must traverse. It represents the ultimate stage of the mystical journey, where the spiritual seeker experiences complete dissolution of the individual ego (fana) into the Divine. In this profound state of spiritual poverty (faqr), the self is entirely annihilated, similar to how shadows disappear in the light of the sun or how patterns on water vanish into the ocean. The seeker is stripped of all worldly and spiritual attributes, reaching a state of absolute silence, forgetfulness, and eternal peace. This valley marks the culmination of the quest, where all dualities cease and only the eternal Divine Reality remains.
