The Concepts of Contraction (Qabd) and Expansion (Bast) in Sufi Philosophy
In Sufi psychology and philosophy, contraction (qabd) and expansion (bast) represent two alternating spiritual states (ahwal) of the heart. Contraction is a state of spiritual tightness, dread, or sorrow, while expansion is a state of openness, hope, and joy. In Book Six, Section 94 of the Masnavi, Rumi explains that these states are not merely emotional fluctuations but essential, purposeful phases of spiritual growth. He argues that contraction is a necessary prerequisite for expansion, much like autumn is necessary for spring, or night is for day. True spiritual maturity involves accepting both states with equanimity, understanding that the restriction of qabd ultimately prepares the soul for the expansive grace of bast.
