The Sufi Doctrine of the Return of Physical Elements to Earth and the Eternity of the Soul

In Persian Sufi literature, the composition of the human being is viewed as a temporary combination of earthly elements (the body) and a divine, eternal essence (the soul). Upon death, this combination dissolves: the physical body, being of earth, returns to the earth, while the soul, being a divine gift (such as gnosis or ma'rifat), remains eternal and returns to its spiritual origin. This doctrine is highlighted by Sana'i in the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah and later elaborated by Rumi in the Masnavi and Shabestari in the Golshan-e Raz.
