The Condemnation of Gluttony and the Eclipse of Intellect in Jami's Subhat al-Abrar
In Section 135 of Subhat al-Abrar (from the Haft Awrang), Jami presents a moral and spiritual critique of gluttony and excessive focus on food and wine. He argues that physical overindulgence leads to physiological and cognitive degradation, metaphorically describing how fumes from a bloated stomach rise to the brain and block the 'window of intellect' (rowzan-e aql). To reinforce this moral, Jami invokes the Arabic maxim that satiety and overeating destroy intelligence and wisdom (al-bitnah tadhhab al-fitnah), concluding that a stomach filled with bread and water diminishes the capacity for divine knowledge and spiritual science within the seeker.
