Section 135 - On the Condemnation of Those Whose Ambition is Entirely Devoted to Wine and Food

Original content

English translation

See the master, who from dawn to dusk Has only thoughts of wine and food. With joy and merriment, his belly He sometimes fills, and sometimes empties. Oblivious to Paradise and secure from Hell, His place is either the dunghill or the kitchen. His business, for the sake of nurturing his carnal self, Is day and night either defecating or eating. A corrupt stomach, from a false appetite, Passes foul wind and lets out a burp. With these two rancid winds from a filthy nature, He has cast the precious cash of his noble life to the wind. So much has the stomach sent smoke to his brain That the window of intellect has been closed to him. Gluttony of the belly, which is overindulgence, Removes sagacity and intelligence. When the belly is filled with bread and water, Knowledge and wisdom are diminished from the breast. Indeed, what knowledge can be in that breast Which is the dwelling place of lust and malice? And if there is any knowledge, it is less than ignorance, For it is acquired only for the sake of the genitals or the stomach. When he spends his knowledge, He expends it for the lusts of the belly and the genitals. Whomever you look upon, whether enemy or friend, Their worth is according to the measure of their ambition. Whoever's ambition is that constantly Wine and food should enter their body, Their value, should it increase, Is only that which comes out from within them. What is uglier in the world than this: To make the heart and soul a parasite of the stomach? You desire heart and soul only for water and bread; You diminish intellect and faith for the sake of this and that. Your ambition is entirely the stomach; Whatever is other than the stomach is non-existent to you.
