The Deathbed Lament and Succession of Caesar in Section 70 of the Khosrow Nameh

In Section 70 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar depicts the final moments and deathbed speech of Caesar. Six years after the passing of Gol, Caesar feels his own mortality approaching as old age and physical frailty overtake him. On his deathbed, Caesar summons his young successor, Jahangir, seats him upon the royal throne, and passes his sovereign authority to him. Caesar passionately laments the transience of life, mourning that his seventy years have vanished like dust and wind, leaving him to face death with empty hands ('basuy-e khak raftam bad dar dast'). This scene underscores the classic Sufi and philosophical reflections on the transience of temporal power and the inevitability of death.
