The Deceptive Path of the Beloved's Tresses in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 35, Poem 48)

In Chapter 35, Poem 48 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar explores the deceptive allure of the spiritual journey, symbolized by the path of the beloved's tresses (zulf).

Initially, the seeker's heart underestimates the difficulty, believing the path to be short and easily traversed. However, upon actually entering the beloved's tresses, the heart realizes the immense complexity, length, and confusion of the spiritual path, leading to endless sighs (āh) and lamentation (zāri). This motif emphasizes how the mystical path of divine love appears deceptively simple from the outside, but reveals itself to be an intricate and bewildering maze once undertaken.
