In Section 62 of Kashf al-Mahjub, Abu Uthman al-Maghribi is quoted: whoever prefers the companionship (sohbat) of the wealthy over merely sitting with (mojalesat) the poor, God afflicts them with the death of the heart (mowt al-qalb).

Hujwiri unpacks a subtle distinction between two forms of association. He advises keeping sohbat (deep companionship) toward the wealthy but mojalesat (occasional sitting-together) toward the poor. His reasoning: turning away (e'raz) from the poor is possible only within mere sitting-together, not within true companionship, because companionship admits no turning-away. When a seeker abandons association with the poor for companionship with the wealthy, the heart dies to its spiritual need (niyaz) and the body falls into the bondage of greed (az).

This passage is a compact lesson in Sufi social ethics: the exact kind of relationship one keeps with rich and poor is calibrated to guard the heart against attachment and preserve inner poverty (faqr).
