و منهم: سیف سیاست، و آفتاب سعادت، ابوعثمان سعیدبن سلام المغربی، رضی الله عنه از بزرگان اهل تمکین بود و اندر فنون علم حظی وافر داشت و صاحب ریاضات و سیاسات بود اندر رؤیت آفات. و وی را آیات بسیار است و برهان نیکو. از وی می آید که گفت، رضی الله عنه: «من اثر صحبة الأغنیاء علی مجالسة الفقراء إبتلاه الله بموت القلب.» هرکه صحبت توانگران برگزیند بر مجالست درویشان، خدای تعالی وی را به مرگ دل مبتلا گرداند. با توانگران صحبت گفت و با درویشان مجالست؛ از آن که از فقرا کسی اعراض کند که با ایشان مجالست کرده باشد نه کسی که صحبت کرده باشد؛ از آن چه اندر صحبت اعراض نباشد و چون از مجالست ایشان به صحبت اغنیا شود دلش به مرگ نیاز بمیرد و تنش به بند آز گرفتار گردد. چون اعراض از مجالست را ثمرت، مرگ دل بود، اعراض از صحبت چگونه باشد؟ و اندر این کلمات فرق ظاهر شد میان صحبت و مجالست. والله اعلم.

English translation

And among them: the sword of governance, and the sun of felicity, Abu Uthman Sa'id ibn Sallam al-Maghribi, may Allah be pleased with him. He was one of the great ones among the people of stability (tamkin), and he had an abundant share in the branches of knowledge, and he was a master of spiritual disciplines and of governance in the perceiving of afflictions. He has many signs and fine proofs. It is related from him that he said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Whoever prefers the companionship of the rich over sitting with the poor, Allah afflicts him with the death of the heart.' Whoever chooses the companionship of the wealthy over sitting-together with the dervishes, God Most High afflicts him with the death of the heart. He said companionship with the wealthy and sitting-together with the dervishes; because the one who turns away from the poor is one who has sat together with them, not one who has kept their companionship; for in companionship there is no turning-away, and when one passes from sitting-together with them to the companionship of the rich, his heart dies to the death of need, and his body becomes captive in the bond of greed. Since the fruit of turning away from sitting-together is the death of the heart, how then would turning away from companionship be? And in these words the distinction between companionship (suhbat) and sitting-together (mujalasat) became apparent. And God knows best.
