The Divine Protection of Moses in the Oven in the Masnavi

In Book 3 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the narrative advances from Moses' miraculous conception to his perilous birth amidst Pharaoh's intense espionage. To enforce his decree, Pharaoh deploys cunning midwives to detect newborn Israelite boys. When these informers discover Moses and alert the officers, Imran's wife receives a divine revelation instructing her to cast her infant into a blazing oven. Rumi elevates this terrifying moment by connecting it to the legacy of Abraham, the 'Friend of God,' invoking the Quranic command for the flames to be cool and safe. The fire miraculously has no effect on Moses's body, illustrating the Sufi principle that destructive physical elements are entirely subservient to divine command. This episode highlights the absolute futility of Pharaoh's worldly stratagems when countered by God's protective grace, as the officers initially depart empty-handed, prompting greedy informers to demand a further search of the chambers.
