The Division of Hunger into Voluntary and Involuntary in Jami's Haft Awrang

In Section 137 of Jami's Haft Awrang (specifically in Silsilat al-Dhahab), Jami divides hunger (jū') into two categories: voluntary (ikhtiyari) and involuntary (idtirari).

  1. Voluntary Hunger (Jū'-i Ikhtiyāri): This is the hunger of the seeker (sālik), who deliberately abstains from food and practices self-mortification. The seeker's goal is to tame the rebellious soul (nafs) and prevent it from becoming accustomed to pleasure, eventually leading them to their spiritual destination.
  2. Involuntary Hunger (Jū'-i Idtirāri): This is the hunger of the gnostic ('ārif), who, having tasted the sweetness of proximity (qurb) to the Divine, loses all desire for physical eating and drinking. Their sustenance is spiritual intimacy with God (uns bi-haqq), making their lack of physical appetite an involuntary state resulting from being completely consumed by divine manifestation.
