Section 137 - Allusion to the Division of Hunger into Voluntary and Involuntary

Original content

English translation

Hunger is the custom of the wayfarer of the path, It is the way of the aware gnostics. The wayfarer's hunger is by choice, The gnostic's hunger is by necessity. The practicing traveler displays A deliberate turning away from foods, So that his heart does not become accustomed to pleasure, And his carnal soul does not incline toward rebellion. His path eventually leads to the destination; When he reaches the destination, he finds rest. When the gnostic finds the pleasure of proximity, He feels no attraction to eating or drinking. What are his eating and drinking? Intimacy with the Truth, He is perpetually submerged in the Truth. You see his morsel from the table of 'He feeds me,' And his drink from the spring of 'He gives me drink.' His soul, in the Eternal manifestation, Receives eternal consolation from the Truth. The need to eat arises from an empty stomach; Tell me, what lack is there for the Eternal? If anyone defines the Eternal, 'He is that which has no cavity.' The attribute of having a cavity is specific to contingent existence, Its fullness comes from the grace of the All-Merciful. If the All-Merciful does not grant existence, It remains empty of the meaning of existence. Since the essence of the All-Merciful is existence itself, How could it ever be empty?
