The Doctrine of Dietary Moderation and the Wealthy-versus-Poor Distinction in Section 8 of Jami's Baharestan
In Section 8 of Jami's Baharestan, a sage is asked when a human being should hasten to eat and answers by distinguishing social station: the wealthy should eat whenever hunger arises, while the poor should eat whenever food becomes available. The accompanying verse establishes a broader ethic of moderation, counseling that one should eat only enough to keep 'the house of the body' from falling into ruin through either excess or deficiency. The passage frames eating as a governed, prudent practice balanced between abundance and scarcity, tying bodily sustenance to self-restraint rather than appetite.
